It took an extra month and the start of a major new drive but we did it. The #1 spot. The official count was 956-955.
Officially it happened a little bit before 4 AM GMT on June 28th. That's June 27th in all of the U.S. and June 28th in all of Europe.

currently there're 14 RPS and 12 NPLB primes with index >= 4950
for index >=4000: RPS 26, NPLB 26 those will lost the next days. |

I believe that this project should commit itself, to achieving the goal, before this summer is out, of becoming the first project to reach 1000 top-5000 primes before PrimeGrid gets there first.

Set the target. How many cores do we need to ramp up on this? Maybe we need another race.
Its mid Winter here so I'm ready to charge.

so about 40 (plus some while others dropped out) primes to get 20% of Top5000 primes on current list.
and only some of higher n-ranges primes for 6th place in score! |

Sorry, I haven't had time to check all of the threads. Yes, I would like to go after 1000 primes if enough people are interested. While we won't sacrifice project goals to do so, we're in an excellent position to go after such a goal without doing anything out of the ordinary at this point.
Now that the 11th drive is n>450K, there is no danger of current primes dropping off for at least 2 months and we are above where PrimeGrid started their major drive(s), which makes a big difference in the placement of each prime as we progress. I currently have 8-9 quads on that drive (depending on whether one of my machines is out of commission at the moment; can't tell until I get back early Thurs.). I had planned to pull all but 2-3 of them around n=460K-465K (to get well above PrimeGrid's starting point) but will leave them there if we want to go for 1000. If people want to add some more to help us go after 1000 before PrimeGrid gets there, I think that would be excellent. ![]() As for a rally, I'm all for having one at any point if people would like to have one. After Free-DC started their own project, I figured it'd be best to wait awhile as well as wait until our 11th drive got to a point where the primes don't drop off in < 1 month. One more thing: I see we now lead RPS by an amazing 30 primes; even as our lower 11th drive primes continue to drop off. What is happening is that we are raising that 5000th prime enough that several other projects are losing primes faster than the difference of how fast we are finding new ones minus how many of ours are dropping off. Moral of the story: Even if top-5000 primes drop off fairly quickly, it can still be a good strategy to knock off others primes as long as you continue to search higher. Gary |
