vi is good. Though I doubt you would find it easy to use.
gedit works. vim is also good.

Fedora is also a good Linux distribution. SUSE is perhaps the oldest.

I started with Debian a long time ago. If the effort spent on mucking around with free/non-free were actually spent on getting stuff to work...

So, here's what I think is most important for a distro: a rolling release & major focus on x86_64 support. So, after a brief stint with Gentoo, I eventually found Archlinux. Now I'm happy as a clam.

I use reiserfs3, because it's a killer-filesystem! I also use LVM2, since this setup allows me to resize all partitions (even an encrypted /) on-the-fly, which is very handy. And LUKS to make myself more interesting to the FBI.

I exclusively use KDE (Amarok-star! Yeah, yeah, yeah!) so now I even get the newest version 1 day before the official release, because some of the Arch devs are also involved in that project. :-)
