Do different operating systems speed up computers? I was considering upgrading a PII 363.9 MHZ computer from Windows 95 to XP.

Windows XP has a better handling of multithreading processes, but I'm afraid it needs a lot more memory...

Unhappy slow iteration times

any body got any suggestions?
i have an athlon xp 2500+
512mb pc2700
NForce2 mobo
no screen saver & geforce FX5600 128mb of ram 4 what its worth
win xp home with bare minimum running
and my iteration times are .141 or so being smoked by a
P4 1.8ghz 256,b pc2100 win xp home with a lot of stuff running!!!
that p4 is .050 or so
would it be worth it to replace the 512@2700 with 1gig@3200 or add another 512@2700 and make use of dual chanel DDR
this is really confusing me cause pcpitstop said the processor was fine but it's being smoked by my dad's comp
oh well
any suggestions michaeldbs (AT) netzero.net
ps i've almost convinced myself to OC to 3200+

First of all don't be embarassed by the difference between your Athlon and your Dad's P4. Prime95 is now optimized for SSE2 code which the P4 runs but the Athlon does not. What your see in the difference between hand optimized X87 and SSE2 code. Since Athlon's are better at X87 code than P4's, your Athlon might beat your Dad's P4 at Trial Factoring. Also, your Athlon can run LL tests of larger exponents than your Dad's P4 can. That said, here is something you can try at no cost to you. See if your NForce 2 MB and memory will run at a 200MHz FSB. I have an Athlon XP 2400+, NForce NF7 Version 2.0 MB, PC 3200 memory, Windows XP Pro which dies at 136MHz FSB and runs like a dream, completely stable (stable like > 30 days / reboot) at 200MHz FSB. In fact nothing is over clocked in this configuration. Go figure!

Extra memory will not speed up prime95 at all.

well i decided to overclock my processor and memory
i went from AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (333fsb) to 3200+ (400fsb)
i also OCed the memory from 2700 to 3200 as well
my iteration times are down from like .140's range to about .096 or so while i'm playing games. I'm pretty happy with it. I ran the torture test for 24hrs and the highest CPU temperature reading was 41 C

Would adding more memory to make use of the Dual Channel on my mobo improve iteration time at all?

Dual channel will give a small boost in speed. Maybe 5% tops.

I disbelieve that a P4 at 1.8Ghz is running .050 iterations - should be closer to .100 or a little over.

In any event, the Athlon doesn't support SSE2, which makes it a lot slower per Mhz than a P4 on LL work - about the ONLY place I've ever seen where a P4 beats an Athlon per Mhz.

On the other hand, your Athlon still chews through multiple LL tests per year, so it's certainly not a waste doing that sort of work.

8-)

michaeldbs what brand of memory are you using?

I have Kingston DDR333 (PC2700) ValueRam but they overclock only up to DDR340 (170mhz).

i too have kingston 512mb 2700 value ram
i think the trick is not to oc right out of the box
i've run p95 almost constantly since august so it's gotta be pretty well burnt in
also maybe the mobo has something to do with it
i have a MSI k7N2 delta L all the reviews i read said it was great for OCing
