Default Computer Starts Beeping

If I run the program constantly for more than an hour, I start to get a beeping noise from inside the tower of my CPU.

Is this the program or my computer?

It is your computer. I don't think prime makes any noise, apart from if you find a prime number.

Can you check the temperature of your system. You might be running a bit warm. One way to test this is to remove a side panel on your tower, and leave it open when you run prime.

If you are running too hot, then I suggest you clean out the system, and or install better/higher capacity fans. Dust is quite insulating.

Thanks, but it appeared to stop on its own. It only happened while I was running Prime95, however. When I closed the program, the beeping stopped. The tower isn't running hot, either. I'm not sure what it was, but it stopped now.

Hmm. That does really sound like a cooling problem. Did you ever run a popular benchmark (like e.g. 3dMark2001 or Aquamark or Sandra or....) on your computer for an hour or longer? Or any other DC-Project?

What temperature is the room your computer is located?

You can ignore the problem and just quit using prime95, but i would advise to find and fix it even if you do not want to use prime95 any longer.

I wonder if it is the motherboard with its built in speaker beeping ( when memory is bad or a video card isn't seated correctly ) like when just after turning the PC on or during POST ?

Maybe it is a bad sound card driver that somehow isn't saving its state correctly and when prime95 runs the sound card driver is using the values from the FPU or SSE2 instructions as some initializing value.

I use MBProbe sometimes and it is capable of sounding a beep/alarm if the temperature of the MB or CPU gets above a specified value.

Maybe a program like this is running or the BIOS/MB has some sort of audible alert on high temperature ( or at least above some preset/configurable temperature ) or maybe even a specialized diagnostic/system status monitoring add in card.

It is an interesting mystery.

It would be fantastic if it is prime95 beeping from finding another prime !

The only other things I can think of that cause a computer to start beeping are a stuck key on the keyboard or something pressing down on one accidentally ( like a book resting on a corner of the keyboard ), or when some program is malfunctioning/(maybe due to very low system resources) and the OS isn't able to handle any more key presses or mouse movements ( messages ? ) then moving the mouse will cause a clicking/beeping sound.

Exiting programs will sometimes fix it.

Well, I ran the program for about 6 hrs. today when I got back in the room it was beeping again. As soon as I exited the program, it stopped. My room varies widely in temperature, basically because our heating/AC unit sucks. (I live in a dorm, if you couldn't tell) I doubt it's a prime number, because I was only checking the primality of a number, and it had finished it and moved on the factoring once I entered the room. Plus, I didn't get any exciting messages from the program. I have no idea what it is, or why it's only while running prime95, and that irritates me.

Thank you all for your help.

You don't have MBM or HardwareDoc or something running? They have default settings for temperature alerts. Maybe something like this is causing the beep?
Or setting in the BIOS?

Nope, nope.

I don't have either of those running. Now, about the BIOS, help me out to see if I can figure out if the setting is like that. Or something. I'm not real computer savvy, if you couldn't tell.

Every motherboard is different in some way. I have an Abit, I power it on and hit F2 (It may not be F2 for your case, just depends) while it is in post (checking memory). If you time it right, this will bring up a menu. This has to happen long before the "Windows" screen comes up (if you see it, you're too late).

This is the BIOS menu and let's you tweak numerous things, so use with caution and when in doubt, do not save your changes.

Anyway. Now the fun part, you have to search for the temperature settings and see if monitoring is enabled. If enabled, is a beep/alarm/ etc. enabled? What are the temperature values? To make things even more fun, temperature monitoring may not even exist in your BIOS settings. :surprised

What is you motherboard? Maybe someone can step you through the menus.
In the end, this may not solve your problem, but could be educational.
