That's a big file. Very unwise of them.

Yup. Looks like it overloaded the server, as expected. I hope this won't cost us a lot of potential participants! There are no mirror sites to George's mersenne pages, are there?

I have a mirror but it's in Italy.

(sorry, I mixed up TauCeti and lpmurray's quotes!)

I'm sure quite a few people visit the Italian GIMPS pages every day, Luigi! Your traffic statistics will show that. Most visitors arrive via the links on mersenne.org

I was thinking of mirror sites in English, actually.

Ciao,
Robert.

What's It Do? Nothing, but Mathematicians Relish the Quest (Commentary) Los Angeles Times, December 29th, 2003 (Subscription -- but registering is free).

A nice article by Fernando Q. GouvĂȘa (professor of mathematics at Colby College). It mentions GIMPS; then lightly surveys mathematical theorems and quests and makes some sense of the motivation for finding out things that may not have immediate practical use.

Nice story, thanks for the link, only_human.
If you don't want to register, you can read Mr. GouvĂȘa's story here: http://mersenne.dse.nl/m40gouvea.htm
