What's It Do? Nothing, but Mathematicians Relish the Quest (Commentary) Los Angeles Times, December 29th, 2003 (Subscription -- but registering is free).

A nice article by Fernando Q. Gouvêa (professor of mathematics at Colby College). It mentions GIMPS; then lightly surveys mathematical theorems and quests and makes some sense of the motivation for finding out things that may not have immediate practical use.
