Six days ago now, I've brought the news to the attention of a Flemish newspaper (het Belang van Limburg) that always carries interesting science news in this section, but they haven't used it. Come to think of it, they rarely ever have any math stories. Too bad, really. Oh, well...

Beeld (South Africa): VSA student ontdek wêreld se grootste bekende priemgetal (US student discovers world's largest known prime)

Wiskunde PersDienst (Math Press Service): 40ste Mersenne-priemgetal gevonden (40th Mersenne prime found); also here.

The belated AP story seems to be causing a second spike in the number of accounts:

AT 2:31EST 12/11 ON THE FOX NEWS CHANNEL THE NEWS WOMAN ANNOUNCED THAT A NEW PRIME NUMBER, THE LARGEST EVER WAS FOUND ALONG WITH THE DETAILS. THE NEWS SPOT WAS ABOUT 20 SECONDS LONG. USUALLY THEY REPEAT THOSE TYPE OF NEWS STORIES. I WILL LEAVE THE CHANNEL ON TO SEE IF THEY CONTINUE TO ANNOUNCE IT. IT CAME ON AT THE HALF WAY POINT ON THE HANNITY AND COLMES SHOW. BOYS IT LOOKS LIKE WE MADE THE BIG TIME....
