As I understand it, icon or no icon you should be able to just double-click to bring it up. Sounds like an issue with the Remote Desktop. You can try VNC. I've used it on ocassion in the past and it worked very well. But about Remote Desktop, are you sure you have all the latest patches applied on the client and target computers? Maybe this is an issue that others have reported and M$ has patched.
