Question "Managing" attachements?

Question, on the user control panel, there's an option to "manage" your attachments. But as near as I can see, you can only view what you have uploaded, but not change an uploaded file or delete it.

Is there a way to either change an attachment or delete an old attachment?

It appears you can only do that within the 60-minute edit window. I can remove the attachment I just posted in the aliquot-sequence thread because I posted it less than 60 minutes ago, but I cannot remove my two older attachments, both in the Running GGNFS thread.

But, but, what if I want to delete an attachment after that? Do I have to appeal to a moderator? That seems kinda silly.

No sillier than having to ask a moderator to change text in your posting after the edit time expires, IMO. Same considerations: (1) don't post (text or attachment) what you might regret more than an hour in the future; (2) if you plan, or find yourself needing, to update or delete a post (text or attachment) more than an hour in the future, then it will require moderator ability or assistance.

Well, it just seems that if you can post an attachment, you should be able to delete your own attachment.

Well, I don't look at it as regret, but if circumstances change, it seems it would be easier to let the poster do rather than having a moderator have to get involved. Well, I don't make the rules, just live by 'em (and quite enjoyably for the last 4 years! Didn't really realize how long it had been!) Thanks for the info!

Use a url to link then. If you have access to webspace and can upload a file and then post the file, you can then change or delete the file.

... and Uncwilly, not surprisingly, comes through with a very practical suggestion!

You can -- within the same edit time limit that applies to deleting your text or even your entire posting: one hour. The attachment is part of your posting; it's a copy of whatever the source image/file/whatever was, not just a pointer (link) to that. As Uncwilly points out, posting a pointer (link) instead of an attachment gives you control over the content past the one-hour edit limit; later, you can't delete the link, but you can delete or move whatever the link points to, so that clicks on the link thereafter don't reach the actual image/file.
