Default Two mersenne results !

The factorization of the mersenne number 2^757-1 on NFSNET should finish at about the same time as the verification of the 40th Mersenne prime 2^???????? - 1, about the start of december 2003.

Both projects will ( hopefully) have results from long term distributed work to celebrate.

Hopefully the LA has now finished. It was nearing the end when Paul left the office yesterday. Unfortunately, he is having to take a few days off for personal reasons and so we won't know if it ran to completion or crashed until he returns. I think that will be Tuesday or Wednesday, but his absence was unplanned and the duration is not certain.

If it completed, he can usually do the final step in one day.

He has my best wishes on whatever the personal reasons are, and I hope it all works out ok (or as ok as may be possible) :(

My understanding is that generally he does the final step in a matter of hours; is this number particularly difficult in terms of the complexity of the final step? I know the last one had some unlucky choices of dependency.

I am not aware of any particular difficulty being anticipated. However, we have seen some attempts that have gone 6 or so iterations. (Not unexpected considering the total number that have been done).

Further, I don't know what "real work" he will have awaiting him that takes precedence. So I, conservatively, suggested a day.

The LA finished while I was away, apparently successfully. The square root phase is running right now. It usually takes several hours, which is exactly the same time as "in one day" to the accuracy we're using.

With luck, we should be able to anounce factors later today.

The "personal reasons" arose from a family member going into hospital. I may have to disappear again at short notice a couple of times again in the next couple of weeks.
