For the record, I think that octane ratings in the US are different than the rest of the world (please correct me if I'm mistaken). The octane on the pumps in the US are the average of Research Octane Number and Motor Octane Number ( (RON+MON)/2 ), while the rest of the world uses RON only. This means that 87 octane in the US is actually about 90 or 91 RON (I think).

Where I used to live in Idaho, the altitude was high enough that 85 octane was the low end, to help prevent vapor lock in the summer (my understanding is that volatility increases with octane).

And as for the above post about higher octane fuel containing less energy per gallon...I believe that's because many octane increasing agents are oxygenates, and the oxygen doesn't contribute any energy to combustion. Ethanol, for example, has about half the energy content per gallon as regular unleaded gasoline, but is good for about 130 octane. In an engine built for ethanol (with a higher compression ratio, leading to higher thermodynamic efficiency), fuel efficiency competitive with or even better than gasoline engines is possible.

::thread hijack over:: Sorry about that. Carry on.:)

This is a car equiped with dutch export plates.
Intended for a one time trip from place of buying to place of new owner abroad (although they can be valid upto a month but still intended only for a one time trip)
