64-bit CD or DVD Linux

i am looking for for a version of 64-bit linux that will run from a CD or DVD without touching the hard drive
has anyone got any suggestions
i want this so i can use my athlon 64 as a 64bit cpu but we need 32bit windows

At http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download the normal download is a Live CD (what you describe)/installation CD (it's Live with a Install button). Just choose a 64-bit version from that screen.

does anyone have any suggestions on what will be helped by 64bit

GMP-Fermat? (hint)

There is also a 64-bit linux version of mprime, but I don't know how improved for 64 bit this code is. Any benchmarkers out there?

Download the latest GMP sources and the latest GMP-ECM sources. Build both. Then run ECM to factor numbers of a class that you find interesting.

i have tried building gmp-ecm 6.2.1 on it but failed because of missing libs
this is on a clean ubuntu 8 64bit installation
i actually decided to install rather than use a live cd
what packages do i need to install to compile it
i will post more info tomorrow as i am going to bed now
edit: if anyone has a 64bit gmpecm 6.2 binary could u please pm me

I saw this one on my Gentoo system a while back. It's to do with a mis-installed or misconfigured gcc compiler.

Googling for "C compiler cannot create executables" (with the quotes) was enough to get me back on track. Running the same query just now turned up: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-17033.html

Start with an
sudo apt-get install buildessential

That should get everything you need to get configure going.

thanks for this
typing sudo apt-get install libc6-dev g++ gcc
was what solved it
for some reason buildessential could not be found in the list of packages
i have now found i dont have gmp
is there a simple apt-get command for installing this
i am going to try installing it now from the website
