I'm still with flu but my brain still works...I don't care if the servers don't dry because there's a thing called "backup" even if I am not upgrading my hard disk.

Bummer. I hope you guys get it worked out. Beyond, if you're enjoying the project, we can accomodate your machines...no problem, regardless of the situation.
Carlos, keep in mind that I've always considered the lower range as lower priority than the higher range. I've put more of my resources than I would have normally to accomodate attempting to clean up the lower range. I don't feel the project would have the excitement that it does currently if we had not found as many top-5000 primes as we have largely as a result of Beyond on drive 1. I still feel it should be about a 60-40 split between top-5000 and 'clean up' work but am willing to accomodate my machines at about a 50-50 split other than the temporary testing I did for 2 days on IronBit's server. Adam reactivated his server because he thought it would also be a good idea to have extra servers temporarily as a result of the fact that we're doing low n-ranges. I did not ask him to do this but I agreed with him doing it since we weren't sure what the status of yours were. He decided on his own. Otherwise, we would only have 4 servers right now. With large resources on lower n-ranges, don't you think it makes sense to have an extra server or two? At least Beyond can split his large resources and still have all his firepower working without crashing any one server. It's only temporary that we have 4-5 servers. An option for you would be to simply shut down one more of your servers and hand the work to IronBits. I believe he has one more server available. Gary |

Congrats on the new machine. I am still without quad in my house :-( I hope your flu bug jumps onto the PC delivery man and he takes it away with him ;-) I have a machine on port 100 at the moment ripping through 54 to 55 pairs per hour (approx 1320 per day) I got the impression in an earlier thread that the work on port 100 was a particular target (they are also pretty quick too ).I think Beyond may have misunderstood "shutting down" as being long term. That is simple to clear up with a couple of handy questions: Are you able to point to a date when you will take the server down? How long do you think your ports will be down for during your upgrade ? Do you want some help to test when you bring it back up? It's simple enough for us to clear our caches and pop onto another port until you are back in business and switch back when the new machine is up. Actually it makes perfect sense to put through an upgrade while there are other ports available. As it is you are announcing a planned outage. Forewarned is forearmed, yes? By the way: if you want to have the protection of an off-site backup of your LLR server folders/archives during your upgrade, I can open up an FTP site for you for a while. Apparently I have 36G free on dn02 if you need it. Although that's 3 times more than my download limit - lol - but I can buy in another download block if need be. No problem Getting your ports working on a quad of their own will be worth it.Look forward to your response. Last fiddled with by AMDave on 2008-03-03 at 10:42 |

I suppose it will take less than 24 hours to have again everything online, not sure. My doubt is about my modem, my current internet connection will double and I read that I have the right to get a new modem. As all know tnerual sent me a new one but without a CD installation and a cable is missing, need to buy it. I'm waiting for a response from my ISP provider about the modem, then I'll decide what to do. I want to keep the current OS but I don't know if I will need to re-install it again..I know for sure that I'll need at least to install the modem and as we all know things don't tend to be working on the first attempt. After this I sure need all necessary help. EDIT: The upgrade will be on a Friday, that will give me plenty of time to work on the new machine and set everything up until Saturday...lol Carlos Last fiddled with by em99010pepe on 2008-03-03 at 10:33 |

Great.
Outage to start on a Friday (date yet to be decided) I take it that we should keep cranking on port 100 as it has the lower quantity of pairs from what I understand. I have been able to upgrade win2K and earlier without re-installs but I suspect with XP you may be better off with a re-install. From some experience in building windows application servers I quote at 12 hours for software installs and configuration (I haven't got around to building HDD images yet, which would be a lot faster) That modem is the main area where I can offer my help to test. You should be able to test the ports locally on your LAN, but we can help you test external access via the modem as well. /ed - most modem software is downloadable. check out the manufacturer's website - ed/ (I promise that I knocked on wood before saying this) In the extreme case the new mobo has any problems, there will be the rest of the weekend to re-build the old set-up and get cranking again while the problems get sorted. (but that's not going to happen) BTW - I edited the post above while you were typing - re FTP backup if you want? I have had backups fail on me after I tested them. Always extra cautious now. If anyone else has a faster link than me that would be better though (1.5Mbps inbound to me, 256 Kbps outbound from me, 10G/month cap) Last fiddled with by AMDave on 2008-03-03 at 11:20 |

Port 100 is high priority so we all should keep our efforts there.
About the backups, thanks for the offer but I think I can manage myself away to backup the server, it's only 100MB with all results so far returned by the four servers I host. I'll make several copies on DVD, CD, pendisk, another machine, etc. If I really want to be fast I can easily have everything up and running, I just need to install the new modem on the second machine (quaddy) and move the server to it. A clean OS installation with Antivirus and the rest of the software fleet will take 1-2 days max... Carlos |

Sounds like a good plan.
Let us know in a couple of days how we are going on the port 100 queue. |

carlos: no cable missing, i removed the usb cable because you don't need it, you only need the ethernet cable !
what you have to do: plug the modem on the line, plug the power, plug the ethernet cable in your computer now you can surf to the modem "web-config": http://10.0.0.138 ther you have a web menu to config the modem ! (easy to understand and i leave it in english (flemish or french is not your primary nor secondary language )if you need support, go here: http://speedtouch.net.nz/ |

There are not very many crunchers on this project to pass them around to several servers. In about a week, I will have a full time dedicated commercial circuit installed with 10M down / 1M up with unlimited data usage. If necessary, I can change that to 15M down / 2M up. :) Once that gets into place, I can host as many server ports as you see fit to run. The windows box running port 500 will get moved over to the new CentOS Server I just built (quad/8gb ram/over 1/2TB storage) after the circuit gets installed. I'll be putting up web pages and stats for each server/port so you will always know how many knpairs each port has, the results.txt files will get moved to a password protected directory so you can fetch them any time you like. I will also set up a mechanism so that you can put work in a passworded directory, and it will take that server/port down, append the data to knpairs.txt then bring the server/port back online. I also read there is a way being developed to auto-notify users when a prime is found. Once that gets worked out, it should be pretty much automated. :) Let me know if you can think of anything else you want or can think of, that would make your lives easier. Keep on crunching!
