Troubles with Debian Netinst

I succeeded in installing Debian from the network, and mprime is happily crunching, but...

I just can't install (make) GMP.

I'm on an old Celeron 1.8GHz, and installed only the barebone needed (no GUI, no servers). When I try to make GMP, the process halts saying that "I don't have permissions to handle or open libgmp.so.3" unless I'm root. The same if I try to compile and run a program from a different account.

Hints?

Should I reinstall Debian?

Presumably you have a basic Debian there and you have download the latest GMP. Of course you will need gcc, m4 etc...

Did you download it as a non-root user (luigi), unpack it as luigi, run "./configure","make" and "make check" as luigi and as root "make install"?

No.

I tried both worlds. Once I saw I couldn't install as "luigi", I tried as "root".

I can ./configure, but when I run "make install", after some compiling, I get this message:

"/usr/bin/install: cannot remove '/usr/local/lib/libgmp.so.3.4.1' : permission denied"

Very strange... I never had troubles with GMP and Mandrake.

Hey, it seems to be version 4.1.4 plain vanilla!

And still that ugly "permission denied" during make.

Finally I made it as root, and compiled as user. Using Cygwin, I completely forgot to add -lm to the command line of gcc under REAL linux.
