It just prints your basic status report line (e.g. for me "[Worker #1 Aug 1 13:04:06] Iteration: 1110000 / 26179411 [4.2399%]. Per iteration time: 12.817 ms.") every x iterations. I imagine it would be useful if someone didn't have access to stdout, but then again, if they're setting that option via the GUI menu, then they can clearly see the stdout.
Another potential use might be to use some external script/program to monitor progress, but again, I can't think of a use case...
