I use SSH to access the computers remotely, and rsync to run a nightly backup of the gimps directory in case of a power failure. I have them all on battery backups.
Maybe run Slax-PXE to serve those computers that can handle the kernel over PXE. Would mean having two servers? Or can you deliver a 32-bit kernel from Slax-PXE to those computers that are 32-bit? And a 64 bit kernel to those that are 64-bit capable?
