Default Screen resolution problem after upgrading ubuntu

I pressed the 'upgrade' button to get from 7.10 to 8.04 on my main workstation (P35 motherboard, nvidia 7300 graphics card using nvidia driver)

It restarted in 800x600 mode; the 'screen resolution' applet won't let me change to any other resolution, and the nvidia-provided driver configuration applet denies that I'm using the nvidia driver - it gives me an instruction which it claims will cause me to use the nvidia driver, I have to run some program and then restart the X server, but when I do that it still denies that I'm using the nvidia driver.

Any ideas?
