You can try moving Prime95/mprime onto a flash drive if the backup is the only cause for writing/reading data from your HDD.

Ubuntu usually comes with some built-in archive manager. Just try "Open with" on the stuff.tar.gz file.

You can unpack all the data by simply drag-and-dropping data from the archive manager window...
