Fermat numbers factorization
 

I feel the lack of a specialized thread dealing with Fermat numbers and their factorization. I often dig into the forum threads to find out information and ideas. So I'd like to test your interest in the subject, and eventually propose the opening of a new factoring thread...

I do. I actually manage fermatsearch.org after Leonid Durman.'s leaving.
Neither Fermatsearch nor Prothsearch have a discussion forum, FermatNumbers mailing list seems like dead, and this is one of the reasons why I proposed the thread here :whistle:

Mersenneforum has the best minds involved in number theory and number crunching, so to me it seemed a good place to start building a forum without spreading people over the net.

FermatSearch had a Yahoo group for awhile. But nobody was interested and it died a silent death.

There's not many of us that do Fermat factoring. And of the ones that do, we tend to know what we're doing.

The FermatSearch website is alive once again. Hopefully it will stay around for a while.

Three suggestions for the fermatsearch homepage:

The "STATS" link placed near the language links is not so good - it took my some time to find it - I didn't want to change the language and so I didn't take a second look to these links.

The stats page ([url]http://www.fermatsearch.org/stats/stats.php[/url]) is missing a "Home" link.

The testing page ([url]http://www.fermatsearch.org/testing.html[/url]) should have two buttons: One which is only calculating the required time, and a second one which actually generates the reservation mail.

P.S.: Reserving N=47 (what else with my nickname :wink:) and k=5e13 to 8e13, I have also sent a mail.

You are right, Jay. I was just wondering about a forum to help newbies to appreciate Fermat factoring, giving them infos about the math that lies behind.

Mersenneforum gives road to many users, and some of them would be happy to offer their computational power on a "new" distributed project.

And it has been tiring (at least for me) to gather information about Fermat factoring in the forum, and had the idea to collect some of the most interesting messages in one place.

I apologize if people think I'm lazy, but I was searching that site and couldn't find what I was looking for.

What is the lowest Fermat where no factors are known? Is it conclusively known to be composite, meaning a test has been run on it? (possibly doublechecked, would be nice to know that too).

Lastly, is there a web page that lists the status of low Fermat numbers, preferably without the clutter of the actual digits of factors? I'm interested in the numbers from F(5) to F(12), which is the lowest Fermat with more than 1,000 digits. (a nice "round" number for my silly human brain)
