this was not unpredictable.

Indeed. But the predictability does not make it any less horrible. There is a grim parallel here in that her father was executed by Zia and she died on Musharraf's watch (and quite likely due to his dragging his feet over providing her adequate security).

If I was Nawaz Sharif I would be very very worried.

He has practically turned a blind eye to the Islamic extremists in his country for years. I can only imagine what terror would be inflicted on India and other parts of the world if those extremists got their hands on some of his nukes. They wouldn't be afraid to use them because they don't fear their own death and have shown no compassion for the parts of the world where their form of extremism is not accepted.

While the reasons and build-up for great wars are complex, I can't help but wonder if (when?) an assassination such as this could be a similar event to the assassination in Sarajevo that some say triggered World War I.
