I am happy to announce that CRUS now has a new co-moderator. In addition to Ian (MyDogBuster) and me, Mathew has now joined our ranks. He has been a helpful and accurate contributor to the project for (I believe) 3+ years now.
Welcome to "our world" Mathew! |
There is an unplanned NPLB/CRUS server outage. See here.
Sorry everyone. |
All CRUS servers are back up. I have temporarily set the public and private PRPnet servers to 7 days for a couple of days to allow everyone to return their completed work.
I'm very sorry about the extended outage. |
If you are starting a new base, please do not use PFGW versions 3.6.0 thru 3.6.3. We have identified a problem that causes the program to output incorrect primes and miss other primes for n<=5 (or < ~40 bits).
To the best of our knowledge, these "bad" versions should still be OK for higher searches. We also believe that later and earlier versions of PFGW are OK for all n-ranges but we are still in the process of making that determination. In the mean time, whenever anyone submits work on a new base, I will ask what PFGW version was used to start the base. Phillip previously identified bases S66 and S79 as having this issue, which alerted us to the problem. Mark has kindly done some programming that will allow us to not start the bases completely over. Ian and I have doublechecked these to n=1000 to give Mark a new starting point for determining what k's are "actually" remaining. With the "bad" primes gone, he will also merge the new smaller primes and old bigger primes together into one good master file of primes. What you will see in the future is a team drive to search a few 1000 k's for n=2.5K/5K to 25K/50K for these bases (and possibly some others). These will be k where the bad PFGW incorrectly found a small prime (and we found no prime for n<=1000 in our doublecheck) and so were never searched higher so we have to "catch them up" with the search limit for the base. Edit: I have doublechecked R35/S35/R79 to n=100. No problems found. R51/S51 likely don't have the issue because they were started in 2010 long before PFGW 3.6.x was released but I will still doublecheck a small k-range of them. |
I am going to be out of town from July 22nd thru Aug. 5th. Please see here for details about a possible outage while I am gone.
|
There was an unplanned (but anticipated) outage
http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?p=379733#post379733 based upon some deduction I have resumed prpnet 1400 and 1465 for CRUS and prpnet 12000 and lltnet 12050 for TPS |
I just completed a very large update to the pages; many bases with 100s of k's removed, new sieve files, etc. The only thing still left to do is reflect the S66/S79 redo effort. You might check your statuses reported over the last couple of weeks to see if everything looks up to date.
|
I have added links to multiple sieve files on the reservations pages for bases 100 to 200 / n=250K-1M. These files were sieved along with our 51k base drive (bases <= 200 with <= 5 k's remaining) that tested the bases to n=250K. I had previously only posted files up to base 100. All files are sieved to P>15T and several are sieved to P>50T. To see the files, do a find on "n=250K-1M".
Serge these should help you out in your efforts. Sorry about any duplication of effort as a result of me just now posting them. Reb, many of these bases would be excellent for your future BOINC efforts. You could load n=250K-500K into your servers and forget about them for quite awhile. Technically most of them should probably be sieved more but I'm not sure that it would make much difference with the firepower on the BOINC effort. Any testing for n>500K should definitely be sieved more before loading the files. |
I have added links to 40 more sieve files on the reservations pages. These were all done a while back by Ian (MyDogBuster). A big majority of them were 1kers for n=200K-400K but there is a mixture of others in there too. The lowest base added was S27 for n=1M-2M. Most of them will likely need additional sieving before testing should begin.
|
I have added a link to a sieve file on the reservation page for S6 / n=1M-2M sieved to P=200T over the last few months by one of my machines. More sieving is likely needed before testing can start. Ultimately we could continue our S6 drive with it.

Gary's out of town. I don't know when he is due back. |
I am due back late next Friday. There will be a massive update at that time. Sorry I'm on an extended business trip.
When is the next update of the reservation tables?
I just did a medium-sized update of some of the easier-to-update bases. |
I suggest you do a quick grep in the scripts that generate the pages.
Good idea. I ran through all of the CRUS stats scripts we have - looks like the "vstats-new" ones were the only ones using sortable.js. |
I will be leaving town for 2-3 weeks early Tuesday afternoon. There will only be sporadic page updates during that time.
|
If someone else can update the reservation tables this would be fine. Iam always stucking to reserve a base because the one was already reserved.
|
Sorry about that. All updates will be made by Friday. I'll then be home for 2 weeks so updates will be coming every day.
|
I just wanted to post some info. that I was recently made aware of about Lennart. See the applicable PrimeGrid thread at http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=6236. Please make sure and read the most recent post in the thread.

I will be leaving town for 2-3 weeks early Wednesday afternoon. During that time, I will make a few updates to the pages here-and-there as time permits.
|
My apologies for the servers and pages being down. Obviously I had a power blip while I am out of town. I have a friend going over to my house later today to turn the machines back on. That should get the pages back up. I'll then request that one of the admins get online to get the servers running. That will likely take a day or two.
|
All servers and the pages are now up. Sorry about the outage.

All servers and pages are back up. I'm sorry about the extended outage. It was problematic getting Time Warner to get things right while I was out of town.

Serge has released the following 20 bases:
R93, R103, R133, R221, R343, R784, S43, S81, S86, S100, S112, S148, S155, S230, S335, S343, S395, S676, S784, S875. Most have been searched to a fairly high limit but several have sieve files up to n=1M...might be good for BOINC or other folks with large resources. |
Here is a belated report on these 31 bases. They are all released. Done to the limits as shown:

I will be back on Wednesday. Page updates will begin then.

The project greatly appreciates the enthusiasm for new bases generated by Mark's excellent new starting bases program. Please note that testing large-conjectured bases creates quite a bit of admin work for us here. Therefore we are requesting that if a new base is reserved, please reserve and complete the entire base to n>=10K. (With the exception of bases 3/7/15.) Anything less creates a lot more administrative work than we care to undertake.
Thanks to all of our searchers! :-) |
We cannot accept any more work on new bases using srbsieve (except base 3) until a serious issue is resolved. In the mean time for new bases, only work using CRUS's starting bases script can be accepted. Please see here for more details of the problem.
When it appears that the issue has been fixed, before accepting any new bases using srbsieve, I would like to see independent parallel tests run to n=2500 on several new bases. To be more specific, I'd like to see the following on any new base until the issue appears resolved: 1. All files for an srbsieve run to n=2500. 2. All files using the starting bases script to n=2500. All MOB's, primes, trivial k's, and k's remaining should match. We realize that this may frustrate many of our newer searchers. We understand if you wish to release new bases that were recently started. The reasoning is that this project must be very exacting since we are attempting to prove mathematical conjectures and all submissions must be spot on accurate. We cannot run new software without fully independently verified parallel tests. It was assumed that this was already done with srbsieve, which turned out to be a bad assumption. I personally did it myself on Riesel base 3 so I am comfortable with base 3 submissions. |
Thanks to all for following up on what appeared to be a serious problem with srbsieve. It turned out to be a user error. As it appears is already happening, everyone can feel free to continue on with srbsieve. I would still like to see some independent verification of new bases for a period of time, at least up to n=1000 or 2500.
In other news, I will be out of town for a couple of weeks beginning mid-day Monday. This time around, I should have more time to check in and do some updates while I am gone. Thanks to BOINC and srbsieve and many new searchers, the project is progressing very rapidly now, which makes it a challenge to keep up with. |
When is the next update?
|
This coming Saturday.
|
Heh Gary, any update soon?
|
Heh Gary, any update soon?
I will be back this coming Friday. So I'll update on Saturday. |
I did most of the updates. There are still a few to go, which will be done this weekend.

I'm out of town for a couple of weeks until Dec. 17th. I'll do sporadic updates while I'm gone.

I will start making page updates again late Sunday and early Monday.

CRUS stats page is down.
|
It's not just the stats pages - the whole noprimeleftbehind.net server is unreachable. Gary will have to let us know what's up when he sees this.
|
Ugh. Very bad timing. I will be out of town for as much as 10 more days. I'll see if I can have a friend take a look at it in the next couple of days. Sorry everyone.
|
I have sent two different friends over to my house to attempt to get my internet working by unplugging and replugging my modem, router, and cable line. No luck. I will be back next Tuesday. I will have to contact Time Warner when I get back. The last time that this happened there was a faulty external cable that had to be replaced. Something similar may have happened this time.
Our sincerest apologies for the extended outage. We would like everyone to know that we are dedicated to keeping the project moving forward for many years. These temporary outages are just that...temporary. |
Reb, I have some sieve files that might help you out till Gary gets the pages fixed. What ranges do you need.
|
Reb, I have some sieve files that might help you out till Gary gets the pages fixed. What ranges do you need.
I have planned some 100-200k ranges because all 200-400k are done now. There is still sufficient work for 1-2 weeks. |
Short of calling Geek Squad, I have tried everything that I know to try to fix the internet issue. Time Warner came over and they replaced the modem but it made no difference. See more details at http://mersenneforum.org/showpost.php?p=428115&postcount=437.
|
Try turning DHCP off on your router.
|
The pages and servers are back up! A big shout out to Max for his tremendous help in fixing all of this. We spent about 2 hours on the phone. Thanks Max!
There was a hard change in my IP address plus we needed to get rid of my old Belkin router. It could take a couple of hours for the IP address update to propagate completely. For that reason, it may be a little while before you're able to view the pages or connect to the PRPnet servers. Because of the problem the pages have not been updated in over 2 weeks. I will be working to update them over the next couple of days. We are sorry for the extended outage. |
The server is back online!
Without going into the gory details, we opted to retire the Belkin router and go with the new modem/router combo his ISP gave him. Everything's working now. If you can't connect yet, just wait a couple of hours for the IP change to propagate through the DNS system. (Edit: jinxed by Gary, who posted at the same time as me!) |
The server machine went down about two hours ago. It may be a hard drive failure because it goes into a boot sequence but cannot complete it. I'll keep working on it tonight and tomorrow. It is backed up regularly so there should be little loss of data.
|
Everything is back up. There was no loss of data.
|
I'm on a business trip. I should be back about April 29th.
|
(cross-post from NPLB "Server outrages" thread)
Brief server downtime around 2016-04-18, 20:00 CDT (server time) - RESOLVED The noprimeleftbehind.net server apparently rebooted itself around 20:00 server time today. Nothing seems to be "broken" - it had just rebooted (possibly a power blip), which shut down all the PRPnet servers. I logged in around 21:00 and restarted the servers - everything is back up and running now. Total downtime is just about an hour. Nothing to see here, move along people. |
Mayor big breaking news.
Mayor big breaking news
On May 16th 2016 at 10:46:46 GMT, the final k/n prime was proven and completing the final test for Riesel Base 3, for k<=63,064,644,937 for n<=25000. This means, that the largest conjecture to be tested fully to n=25000 is for the next while going to be Riesel Base 3. What is remarkable about this accomplishment is that more than 75% of all work on Riesel Base 3 that has been completed for n<=25000 has been completed since early august 2015. So in the same time it takes a fertile woman to complete pregnancy and bring a child to this world, more than 22,000,000,000 k's has been removed from Riesel Base 3, either as a result of being MultipleOfBase (MOB) or prime. Many thanks goes out to Mark for creating srbsieve. There is no doubt that Riesel Base 3, would not have hit this milestone before 2020 or later, had it not been for srbsieve. So thank you Mark for your tireless effort for the various math projects  Now let's go clean up the hundreds of thousands of k's waiting to have a prime found for n>25000. Anyone with many ressources care to step in and help out? Take care. Kenneth |
Congratulations Kenneth! :smile::flex:
Congratulations Kenneth! :smile::flex:
Thanks  This has no doubt been some very productive months. Files with results will be e-mailed as soon as GoogleDrive accepts my uploads (hopefully tomorrow). |
I will be out of town on vacation from June 16th thru 26th. During that time I will have very limited access to the internet. Good luck everyone while I am gone!
|
The CRUS/NPLB server machine went down very early this morning. It is most likely the power supply. I will get it repaired this afternoon.
|
I was able to pilfer a power supply from a defunct machine. I put it in our server machine and everything is good again. :-)

Power supplies really are the part of a pc with the lowest life expectancy these days. The strange thing is that I have seen 20 year old pcs with their first power supply. Maybe they were more reliable back when dos was the operating system of choice. |
We are going to release all reservations that have not had a status update in over a year. In order for a status update to be official, we need both a search depth and the primes found up to that search depth.

We are going to release all reservations that have not had a status update in over 6 months. In order for a status update to be official, we need both a search depth and the primes found up to that search depth. Exceptions will be made on huge-conjectured and high-n bases. Please check in with us from time to time on all reservations to avoid this fate. Thanks.

Where did BOINC go?
|
A large snow storm caused a power blip at my place today. In the process it appears to have fried my ethernet splitter where the server connects to the internet. Therefore the servers are down. It may be a couple of days before I can get it taken care of. I'll post here with any updates.
|
I guess the splitter wasn't fried after all. I had initially tried all of the unplugging and replugging that usually works after a blip but it did not initially work. It started working on its own after a few hours. Therefore the servers are running again.

To those who may not have noticed, Primegrid is going to hold an Honary Challenge in Lennarts honor, to show respect to the huge impact Lennart has had on the conjectures and the primecommunity as a whole. Everyone who has been around as long as I have, sure should remember Lennart and his big influence on starting up conjectures and double checking where see fit.
The challenge is run through BOINC on the Extended Sierpinski Conjecture, more information can be found here: https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=8703 I know it may be bad stile to promote other projects, but for this seven day challenge, Primegrid and CRUS actually have a common denominator through the great and long work Lennart did for us. The challenge starts on Lennarts 65th birthday. There is instructions in the thread at Primegrid on how to join the challenge and if you are new to BOINC please reach out in a PM and let me help you (even though most is very selfexplanatory). Take care everyone  |
Are we going to see 2020 goals shortly?
|
Within the next week.
Main two goals will be all 2k bases to n>=300K and bases with <= 8 k's remaining to n>=200K. There will also be number of primes goals and goals for conjectures with < 3000-4000 k's remaining at n=2500 to test them to n=10K or something like that. |
The NPLB and CRUS PRPnet servers are down and have been for over 12 hours.
It is not a computer issue. The NPLB and CRUS web pages are OK and I am able to update them. I am getting a MySQL error that I am unable to fix when I try to start a PRPnet server. It is: Connect to database failed: [MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2), native code=2002 It is an old Linux machine. I have tried stopping and restarting MySQL with: sudo service mysql stop sudo service mysql start The stop works fine. When it tries to start it fails with: * Starting MySQL database server mysqld [ OK ] * Checking for corrupt, not cleanly closed and upgrade needing tables. gary@jeepford:~$ ERROR 2013 (HY000) at line 2: Lost connection to MySQL server during query I have shut down the machine and restarted several times. A few times the PRPnet servers would run for awhile and then shut down. Other times they would not run at all. I would appreciate any help. |
Your database is corrupt.
|
Since i dont have any experiences with MySQL i decided to ask a friend of mine, and he has some ideas
First thing, config file. (which should be etc/my.cnf) It should be looking like this
[mysqld] max_allowed_packet = 16M net_read_timeout = 30 net_write_timeout = 60 ... [mysqldump] max_allowed_packet = 16M
Then the log could give more details, so please upload the log. systemctl restart mysqld tail -f /var/log/syslog Plus check the Port 3306 netstat -tulpn | grep 3306 Attach the results please:) |
Discussion continuing in NPLB News thread.
|
The PRPnet servers are back up!
|
I am out of town until March 4th. The pages will be updated after that.

He has contributed heavily to both CRUS and NPLB over the years pushing on as long as the body allowed. |
RIP, Ian

Thanks for letting us know Gary. My thoughts are with his family. RIP, Ian.

Rest in Peace, man.
Condolences to family and friends. Mother life is a bitch sometimes. Edit: any way we make a collect/donation/whatever, and we send something (at least a post card?) to the family? Anybody who knew him in person could organize something? I mean, that's first time for me when I hear a "known" forum member dies. We could make a habit for it in the future... (:davar55: I imagine some of you especially, sending postcards to my wife after I die! :w00t: Sorry for the joke, I know it's not the place and time for making fun, but I could not stop myself, and I know Ian would have appreciate it!) |
RIP, we will miss you

RIP Ian. I'm thinking that it was unexpected as he was active early last week although had not posted since August 21st.
