Version 25.5.1 crashing after 3-5min torture test
I have just finished building a Q6600 machine and have been experencing crashes with v25.
I have tried 25.5.1 and 25.3.1 both version crash after a few minutes of torture testing, blend or other tests. Four instance of the older version 24.4.1 can run for hours in blend test mode without problems. Windows XP (32bit) crash report dialog does come up but I am unable to copy anything from it except the following two lines, which are not very helpful. There is a .dmp file in the Temp folder but it's locked and can't be accessed. AppName: prime95.exe AppVer: 25.3.1.0 ModName: prime95.exe ModVer: 25.3.1.0 Offset: 00045773 Anyone else experienced this before? System specs: Intel Q6600, Abit IP35, Corsair 1GBx4 |
From BIOS:

What are the CPU and mainboard temperatures?
What are all the voltage readings?
What are the CPU and memory timings?
Have you run memtest86+? |
The voltages are all default I believe. I haven't changed anything. PSU is Silverstone ST50EF. CPU at 1.168V. RAM is at 1.8V.
DDR2 timings are 5-5-5-18 2T at 400Mhz. FSB:DRAM ratio is 2:3, that's what the board defaults to. FSB is 272Mhz and RAM at 800Mhz. CoreTemp is reporting: 72, 69, 68 and 72c currently with v24. Idle temps are around 46c. Just finished another 3 hour run with 4 instance of v24 without problems. Haven't tried running Memtest86. I will try that and post the results here. |
A temperature of 46C seems a bit high to me. Make sure the heatsink is correctly fitted, taking all electrostatic precautions and with zero power in the system.
Please someone else confirm that temperature is a little too high. |
Memtest86+ has completed one pass without any errors. Took about 45 minutes. It is still going on - looping probably.
The idle and load temps are a bit high but I am on the stock Intel cooler with ambient temp of around 25C. I have already tried reseating the heatsink twice without any difference in the temps. I am looking at getting a better cooler within the next week or two. To me it looks like a bug in v25, as v24 seems ok, but I can't really find anyone else with the same problem. |
Things are complicated with "CPU temperature" and "core temperatures". Do you have a CPU temperature reading from BIOS?
|
Ah I see. Thanks Paul.
From the BIOS... cpu: 38c sys: 31c pwm: 51c cpu vcore: 1.2v ddr2: 1.76v cpu vtt: 1.19v I have added a loud 92mm 3000rpm fan and the idle "core" temp has dropped to 38-42c and load at 63c. Prime95 v25.5.1 still crashed within 5 minutes. :( |
Is DDR2 supposed operate at 1.8v? Try putting the voltage up to 1.8v.
|
In the memory settings the voltage is set to 1.8v but the monitor page shows it a little lower. I will try to raise the voltage a little higher and see if that makes a difference.
|
You may also want to set the vcore to 1.3v. 100% load on all 4 cores could be pulling it down too far depending on your power supply. I recently had this problem.
The acceptable temp range depends on the core stepping the quad uses.
