I don't know what the selection process is currently for the U.S. team, but back when I was in high school it was as follows. An initial exam was taken by a large number of high school students. This exam was fairly easy. All students scoring above a certain threshold were then invited to take a second exam. From this second exam, 12 students were then invited to a special 'camp' for a week of intense study & testing. The final group of 6 was selected from this group. The whole thing was sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. In 1973 I got invited to the camp, but had to turn it down. Why? Because it conflicted with the ISEF (Intl Science & Engineering Fair). It was impossible to attend both. Since I won an all expense paid trip to the Nobel Prize Ceremony in 1973 from ISEF, I think I made the right choice. |
