There are two 'standard' methods: trial factoring and P-1 factoring.

Trial factoring stops as soon as a factor is found, so no further factors will be discovered.

Occasionally the P-1 test will 'find' two (or perhaps even more) prime factors. When this happens the value returned is their product.

You don't "receive factors". You receive work assignments which are specific tasks to perform on particular exponents. If a factor is known you will not receive that exponent to work on.

To delete an assignment, open the file 'worktodo.ini' in a text editor and delete the line containing the exponent. Also delete the corresponding save file which will be of the form p??nnnnn, where the question marks are alphanumerics and nnnnn is the last five digits of the exponent.

That doesn't make sense. If there's nothing in his worktodo file, then it shouldn't start, regardless of the write-protect state of the directory.

Since the problem only seems to appear when he boots, it sounds to me as though he has another installation of Prime95 in another directory, which is being automatically started at boot.

Try searching all directories for prime95.exe

it isnt only when i boot

it is whenever i start the program
i am using vista
does prime95 not work in vista when it is in program files which is an admin only change

i think i have solved the problem myself after i wrote that
it didnt start the jobs when i started prime95 as admin

it seems vista was the problem

henryzz 2008-03-31 09:18

i found the problem vista copies some files to C:\Users\Family\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Prime95
it copies files like worktodo.ini, results.txt, prime.ini and local.ini basically files prime95 modifies itself
deleting those makes it use the files where the executable is:smile:
it creates them again pretty quickly though:mad:
is there a way to turn this off:question:
my proposed solutions:
1. reinstall prime95 not in program files
2. running in admin mode and it doesnt do it then but it is a pain to have to say yes to UAC every time u start it

25.x doesnt do this but i suspect this is because it is not in program files
i am sure i have left out some info just question me for more info:smile:
could someone confirm what i have said please
