Original or Remake, which is better?

My question for all of you:
Which is better? the original or the remake?

This applies to any movie, television show, album, or what ever of your choosing. You supply the pair (or more) and give your choice and reason.

Here are a few starts:

Poseidon (2006) http://imdb.com/title/tt0409182/
The Poseidon Adventure http://imdb.com/title/tt0069113/
& there is at least 1 or 2 others http://www.snopes.com/lost/poseidon.htm

Insomnia (English lang. remake) http://imdb.com/title/tt0278504/
Insomnia (European original) http://imdb.com/title/tt0119375/

Vanilla Sky (remake, English) http://imdb.com/title/tt0259711/
Abre los Ojos (original, Spanish) http://imdb.com/title/tt0125659/

Three Men and a Baby (remake, English) http://imdb.com/title/tt0094137/
3 hommes et un couffin (French original) http://imdb.com/title/tt0090206/
(and the sequels)

various Disney retreads:
Freaky Friday http://imdb.com/title/tt0322330/, http://imdb.com/title/tt0076054/, http://imdb.com/title/tt0113112/
Parent Trap
That Darn Cat

And Twilight Zone episodes.

Another example:

Generally speaking, the original is better than the remake. There is an innate quality check on originals that are remade. Who would want to remake a crappy original? There are exceptions to this rule of course.

Ocean's Eleven and Born Yesterday come to mind.

I saw a TVM remake of "Double Indemnity" recently, which I enjoyed,
but for some reason I have not seen the original on TV for ~ 35 years.
That film was seriously enjoyable.

PS there is at least one remake of the original (Body Heat?)

"Farewell My Lovely" with Robert Mitchum (late 70s?) was a good remake.

I'd opt that 'The Lord of the Rings' is a pretty good remake.
(Opposed to the animation-movie)
