Bug in Orthos 'blend' on P35 chipset??

I have just built a new system:
E6750 core 2 duo 2.66
Gigabyte P35-DS4 rev 1.0
G.Skill 2x1Gb 800 HK

I have run Orthos small FFTs priority 9 for 1 hour and no errors but if I run 'blend' it gives an error in under two minutes:

I have tried lots of different BIOS settings and no overclocking and different amounts of moderate overclocking and very loose memory timings but only the 'blend' test keeps failing so I'm wondering if it is a bug related to the P35 chipset.

I know almost every hardware monitoring application (Core Temp, SpeedFan, Everest, TAT, ... either won't run or shows at least one bug, eg +12 volts as 0.7 volts or core temps at 10 C below the between core temp, instead of 13-15 C higher.

I have kept this brief and more info can be provided if required.

When small FFTs work and blend fails the culprit is almost always the memory subsystem. I'd increase memory voltage / use loosest memory timings / reduce memory FSB / test one DIMM at a time. If blend fails after all that, only then would I suspect the chipset.

I'm using a P35 chipset and blend worked fine for me.

I have recently upgraded my QX6700 machine to the same motherboard + Kingston DDR2-1066 memory. Everything runs perfect @ 355 * 9 + RAM@1065 :tu:

I set FSB to 365 x 8 and Mem x 2.4 so 800 RAM is running at 876 with very loose timings. I set +0.35 in BIOS so RAM is 2.15v and blend fails after about 1 minute.

This is the second pair of G.Skill HK that I have tried. Both give errors on Memtest +1.70 Test #7 and MS Memory Diagnostic ERAND test on this system. I run 33 loops and only the random number test fails. Both pairs of RAM pass all memory tests on a P35-DS3R.

I'm making no progress getting this system to overclock at all. I suspect the P35-DS4 Rev 1.0 is bad. Gigabyte now have Rev 1.1, 1.2 and 2.0 but they all have crazy cool so it's rather difficult using my HR-01 Plus on them. After three weeks I still don't know if the problem is the RAM or the board.

See this thread: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=8731

This was also using G.Skill.

My guess is you need to set the DDR2-800 to 667 in BIOS. HTH

I have tested my pair of Kingston memory and although its specs say DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15 @ 2.2V anything above +0.25 in BIOS causes errors in memtest. Right now I am running it @, 1065, 5-5-5-15, 2.15V. My advice: lower your voltage :tu: especially that your RAM is designed to work with 2.0-2.1 voltage.

To clear something up, my G.Skill is 800 HK 4-4-3-5 and it will run at 800. I have no problems with FSB 333 and CPU x8 and RAM x2.4. I pass everything FFTs, Blend, OCCT RAM, CPU and RAM & CPU tests and 2@ Super pi.

I can pass FFT and OCCT CPU test with FSB 380 and CPU x8 and RAM x2 so CPU is ok.

I have tried the RAM voltage +.20, +.25 +.30. I wondered if the RAM (both Corsair and G.Skill that normally need 2.1 volts) would let the system POST when first powered on with default BIOS settings. Corsair by email said 'should' so I bought G.Skill. Gigabyte assured me it would and that the default vdimm is 1.80, although I've read it is often closer to 1.85 with this board. I have never heard before that it defaults to 1.90. I will ask Gigabyte tomorrow.

Rev 1.0 is the only DS4 as far as I know that does not have crazy cool, ie the cooling plate on the underside of the board. I risked the rev 1.0 so I could use the HR-01 Plus. I assembled it three weeks ago and Gigabyte have already replaced the board once, 10 days ago because it died. I will find out tomorrow if they will replace it again. I may be offered a DQ6 but it has crazy cool so I'd have to chuck my HR-01 Plus with its backplate.

With FSB 365 and CPU x8, I have tried all of the following but can't get blend or OCCT RAM tests to run for more than 10 min:

1. One stick at a time and as a pair in correct slots for dual chan.

2. Set vdimm +.20 +.25 +.30.

3. Timings set as 5-5-5-15 and the rest auto, and timings as per SPD

4. BIOS has two options (DLLs) for overclocking RAM. Tried both.

5. RAM x2 and x2.40 - ie 730 and 876. No other settings between those two.

6. Set vcore 1.30 and 1.35.

7. Set NB default and +.05

8. EIST enabled and disabled.

I doubt it is a heat issue. I can get through 30 minutes of TAT and 30 min of OCCT CPU test with CPU at 100% without system failing.

So the computer works at stock settings, but you are trying to overclock it?

Cruelty 2007-08-21 12:31

AFAIR, I have set FSB and NB voltages (I'm not sure about accurate naming now) to +0.1V, so maybe this will help you? Other than that you might want to try setting RAM timings to auto, which should increase some of them. Anyways I would not increase Vram over +0.25V. Also disable EIST and other "energy efficient" features (since you are overclocking  )
BTW: which RAM slots do you use for dual-channel operation? I use orange ones.
BTW2: crazy cool - I only have cooling plates under NB and SB, and none under CPU.
BTW3: default Vram @ 1.9V is based on my observations with latest Beta of Everest Ultimate so it may be not 100% accurate.
So the computer works at stock settings, but you are trying to overclock it?
Yes.

I would like to use the 'Sports' option in C.I.A.2 which is a 7%-9% overclock 2853-2905 when the demand calls. Therefore I wanted to find what voltages and memory settings would get the system stable at FSB = 365 x8 with the RAM x2.4. It would be nice to have RAM at x2.4 with FSB = 333 and RAM x2 when over clocking but that does not seem possible if C.I.A.2 is used.
