Memory trouble with 965G board
 

I just ordered 2x2GB DDR2/5300 for a computer (Core2Duo, 965G board) at work, and found that putting the modules in, either on their own or with the 2x1GB in the machine already, slowed the computer down to the point that the boot process took half an hour; this is clearly unacceptable.

These are OCZ's 'Vista Ready' modules, on which there was an excellent deal at dabs.com; the BIOS says that they are 5/5/5/15 and that the modules in the machine already are 5/5/5/15, so incompatibility doesn't seem likely to be a problem (also, that the slowdown happens even if you use the modules on their own would indicate against that).

Has anyone else had this issue? I have a machine at home with the same CPU and board and 4x1GB DDR2/5300 which works very happily.

Are you running Win-XP or Win-Vi$ta? 64-bit or 32-bit? Home or whatever?

Is there hardware conflict, as there might be between add-on cards and on-board devices?

Can you tell us the board's make and model?

Have you tried setting the memory timings by "SPD" in BIOS?

Any chance of you booting a live Linux CD, like Knoppix or Ubuntu?

Running Linux (OpenSuSE 10.2); Intel DG965SS board.

The problem is unaffected by presence or absence of the PCIe graphics adaptor that I installed at the same time. Memory timings are BIOS default, which is read from SPD. Memcheck runs fine.

I've sent the RAM back and will order some from the original supplier of the machine for about £20 more than dabs.com charged; they're 15 minutes drive away, so we can put it on their table and demonstrate the irredeemable sloth if the new memory causes that problem.
