Depends if George meant exactly 90days or 3 months.
He's using the Gregeorgian calendar.
But the assignments from v4 that have not been updated are already reserved (until March 8, if they did not comm with the server until then), so you can safely assign yourself an exponent.
Not quite. Better check if the exponent is assigned using the Exponent Status page first

But, PrimeNet simply will refuse to give you the assignment if it's already assigned to someone else, right?

starrynte 2009-01-09 00:59

correct
PrimeNet simply will refuse to give you the assignment if it's already assigned to someone else, right?
Yes, but does "assign yourself an exponent" necessarily imply use of PrimeNet for that self-assignment?

Interesting happenings at the moment...

All exponents below 18M are double-checked. In particular, this means we have a conclusive result for ALL exponents with an FFT of less than 1024K.

There is only ONE exponent left before everything below 24036583 ("M41") has been tested once.

There are only 9 exponents left until all exponents with FFT size of less than 1536K have been checked at least once. The pile of exponents in the 1536K range (which includes many of the recently released 28-30M exponents) needing first LLs is below 700.

Looks like the trailing edge is catching up pretty quickly. :wacky:

Not any more. (Wow, two milestones in one day...)
Just moments ago, I was assigned my very first double-checking assignment larger than 19M. I'm not sure whether to consider that good news or bad news (GIMPS is moving forwards, but the tests are taking ever longer to complete)...
I'm checking 46,651,457 (my first LL test) which according to my account details will take until 10th April, or 66 days from the start.

I'm wondering how much longer the Gimps project will last. Does the management have an upper limit or do we just carry on? I'm game but I'm guessing that there will be some sort of attrition as the times get longer.

The length of time to test a number has stayed about the same over the past few years. As the state of the art of computers has gotten better, so too the size of the numbers has gotten bigger. Depending on your machine, first time LL tests tend to run around a month or 2.

The project will last as long as the volunteers last.

(I am not managment.)

Would it be out of the question to have graphs of different milestones which automatically update daily?
