M$ is up to its dirty tricks again
Wow! We just checked one of the computers we have to watch after and it was scheduled to upgrade on the third of June. Thanks for the heads up!
So, a client called me this morning. Seriously consternated (a bit like constipated, but different).
"One of my machines upgraded itself to Windows 10 without my permission last night. Now my cash registers don't work! I can't even print price labels." He probably lost something like $10,000 in sales before I was able to talk him through the down-grade path. Possibility of recovering this loss from Micro$oft? The curve quickly approaches zero....
I believe the proper term to tell someone who has this type of experience is "class action lawsuit," but there may be even better words that I'm not aware of. Another thing that people in general need to worry about is when you buy something that's only data and the place that supplies that data goes tits up. That's yet another reason for a class action lawsuit. Like if Amazon.com ever declares bankruptcy, or if Itunes tries to change it's contract. Or maybe exchange some words in those last sentence before this one. |

We've used http://www.grc.com/never10.htm on our machines to block the update. We missed one laptop but luckily declining the post-install EULA caused it to roll itself back. Even luckier was that the rollback actually worked. |
Nasty noise in computer proven to be a fan going bad on the MSI GTX580. Still running. Gets obnoxious under load (mfaktc).
I will have come full circle in my GPU experience when I put my trusty, first CUDA card, GTX460 (Gigabyte) back in the first slot. |
So here is how my week has gone:

Get woken up early (just after 5 am) last Friday by a phone call stating that a relative in the hospital has taken a turn for the worse.
Pass that info along to other relatives that did not know that the other was quite so bad.
Get second phone call in ~1/2 hour, the relative died. They were the last of one generation of my ancestors.
Friday and Saturday help a sibling pack, store, throw out (a lot of relatively valuable stuff, just don't have the room to store or space to haul it), etc. things from their home (4th weekend that I have helped them move). They are moved ~1500 miles away pulling a small trailer. There is a huge downsizing going on in the rush to get moved out by Saturday night. Friday night got fitful sleep on the floor. The week before my auto got hit while on an errand helping with the move.
Get home late Saturday. Turn my laptop back on (turned it off because of heat concerns). Can't log in, it appears to be a HDD failure. It is my only active PC at home. Going to try some rescue next week. (Do not have a current back-up.)
Sunday morning, my wrist watch fails. (Likely a dead battery.)
Today at work, broke a corner off a molar (on a piece of candy). Does not look like a crown is going to be an option. Will have to have it looked at some time after the funeral. (BTW, my past dentist is no longer on my plan, so I will have to contact my provider to find a DDS in my area that I can go to.)
|
That is one rough week. If everything was fair you'd have several months of compensating goodness but every day is a fresh spin of a questionable wheel.
Get some rest. I hate breaking teeth on candy. That's happened to me twice. You know the break was imminent anyway but having it happen on candy throws in that extra guilt trip to blame the victim. I'm sorry for your family loss. Keep on truckin' & stay well. |

They are an absolute MUST NOT for me, all of whose molars are crowned. |

Skittles, Now & Later, taffy and caramel are verboten. Tonight I went to Carl's Jr to feed my inner carnivore. They have inexpensive food, good sightlines to clean restrooms (so I can keep an eye on availability) and they bring the food to the table so I don't have to stand around like a doofus waiting for my tray... Anyhow, on my recipient was a senior discount. I am not a senior citizen. I guess I'm just going to have to accept that I have not aged well. First Norms and now Carl's Jr. Damn you entropy. |

I didn't win. |
I spent essentially all day (so far) in bed drugged to the eyeballs.
Started by waking up at 02:15 with very painful gout. Couldn't sleep so took naproxen and a hefty dose of codeine. Finally dropped off around 04:30. Been swallowing more naproxen at roughly 5 hour intervals since. At least the toe isn't too bad now and I hope to be back to what passes for normal tomorrow. |
