Am I correct in thinking there is a shingles vaccine?
Zostavax. It is essentially the equivalent of fourteen doses of the chickenpox vaccination.

kladner 2015-10-17 01:59

From the US CDC:
Shingles Vaccination: What Everyone Should Know

Your risk of shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) increases as you get older. CDC recommends that people 60 years old and older get shingles vaccine to prevent shingles and PHN.
Shingles vaccine has been used since 2006. Zostavax® is the only shingles vaccine currently approved for use in the United States. This vaccine reduces the risk of developing shingles by 51% and PHN by 67%. It is given in one dose as a shot, and can be given in a doctor’s office or pharmacy.

Who Should Get Shingles Vaccine?

People 60 years of age or older should get shingles vaccine. They should get the vaccine whether or not they recall having had chickenpox, which is caused by the same virus as shingles. Studies show that more than 99% of Americans aged 40 and older have had chickenpox, even if they don't remember getting the disease. There is no maximum age for getting shingles vaccine.

I wish you and I hope that you (both) get well soon!
(this is more like selfish, I don't want to argue with a Serge or a Paul which are already nervous from their illness )

Crappiness, crappiness, I curse the Lord that I posesss, more than my share of crappiness. (*)

This machine has become very flaky the last couple of days, locking or rebooting at no notice. I suspect overheating and the usual procedures will be applied. In the meantime, my router has been reprogrammed to point incoming ECMnet client requests to a back-up system.

Toothache is not helping my mood.

Paul

(*) A diddy amount of kudos for any non-UK reader who knows where that comes from.

Wishing you good luck with the repair. My check list in such a situation (not in order):

thorough clean of the hardware
reseat all plugs including power, disks, memory, cards and CPU
run memtest and Prime95/mprime's torture test
check the PSU, at least in BIOS the voltages
check to board's battery
reinstall the operating system
strip down the system and gradually add and test components
More mildly unhappy hardware

Got a message from msieve yesterday, four days before the predicted end of a month-long job, that the intermediate matrix in block Lanczos was not invertible.

Going back an hour and a half to msieve.dat.bak.chk seems to have fixed it, but I will be quite cross if Monday morning fails to bring me a kernel vector.

Maybe I should instead be delighted at having observed my first cosmic-ray

As my company going to move its office location the money I was saving for a new computer has to be applied on another second hand car.:no: Until now I was 15 mins walk from work...

My grandfather from father side passed away today at 8:00 am GMT.
Got a phone call from my sister whilst I was walking to work. At least he died sleeping, old age without suffering.

This is the first time I get strike directly with a family death and I am not dealing quite well with it. My mind keeps processing past imagines of him....

Oh well, booked my flight to Portugal next Thursday, I'll miss the funeral but I hope to be with my grandmother to support her on this sad moment.
