...term starts this week...
Typical Cambridge - in the rest of the world, this is week 6 already! I found a good book on avoiding pain when playing musical instruments, though I'm afraid it's in Dutch: http://www.vangorcum.nl/NL_toonBoek.asp?PublID=3641-0 |
It might help to stop playing with that baboon. We have been told that they can get vicious.

http://www.smosh.com/smosh-pit/articles/six-worst-pets-apartment-living
Add the wolverine's cousin, the honey badger, to the not-such-a-good-idea list. Unfortunately, the chances of finding the wolverine of your dreams are rapidly diminishing. The North American wolverine isn't designated as endangered, but it should be. Habitat loss, partially due to Climate Disruption has greatly reduced its numbers. Part of the problem is less deep snow pack in which to dig dens and have kits. They may not be very nice, but one has to admire a creature of this size which has been known to take on a polar bear. In one report, this proved fatal to the bear.
Armed with powerful jaws, sharp claws, and a thick hide,[14] wolverines, like most mustelids, are remarkably strong for their size. They may defend kills against larger or more numerous predators such as wolves or bears.[15] At least one account reported a wolverine's apparent attempt to steal a kill from a black bear, although the bear won what was ultimately a fatal contest.[16] In another account, a wolverine attacked a polar bear and clung to its throat until the bear suffocated.[17][18] While wolverines have dominated wolves in competitions over a carcass, some wolves habitually prey on wolverines and can eradicate them from a given area.[7]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolverine :threadhijacked: Though, in truth, I am unhappy about the plight of our largest weasel. |
I play bassoon in one of the local university orchestras; term starts this week, so the first rehearsal was yesterday.
[snip] Yesterday I discovered that it was also distinctly aggravated by playing the bassoon
I told your sad tale to the resident bassoonist at the non-profit where I work. She endorse the cold therapy, with an added suggestion. This was, apply heat before playing, and cold after. She also mentioned Ibuprofen. I will add that this is similar to treatments I learned from my mother. Alternating heat and cold can also help clear up infections, especially in the extremities. Finally, even if you haven't been playing, regular cold, or heat-cold applications a few times a day can work wonders. One rule I have learned is to always end with cold. |

Why does the "cold icy water" seem to be steaming? Also, those aren't baboons. They are Japanese macaques sitting in a hot spring pool.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_macaque The attachment is the side box from the Google search for it. EDIT: I guess this is carrying on the baboon theme, but jeez! Are there people who believe this stuff? |
Would you mind terribly if I moved this subtopic (dead GPU fans) to an already existing thread Unhappy Me: The "dead GPU" edition?
EDIT: Done. |
I thought there used to be a "happy me" thread? Anyway, this post qualifies as both.
My girlfriend is kind enough she let me use her old Mac laptop to run Prime95. I have a thing against Macs and so as a joke I named it "DevilMac." She didn't particularly like that name and made me change it to "WhiteUnicorn." 130 days for a 70 M LL test. Why not? |
130 days for a 70 M LL test. Why not?
Why not indeed? That's only 30% longer than my (only) machine uses for a 35M DC. A test of a 70M exponent would be out of the question for me. It all helps, anyway. |

More unhappy news: The Royals were dominated in Game 4 to tie the series at 2 - 2 thus upping the ante for Game 5 and 6 significantly. Hopefully they can pitch better and bat smarter (don't ignore obvious bunt opportunities!) tomorrow night. |
