R.D. Silverman 2013-01-04 23:31
I've just learned via David Broadhurst that Richard Crandall died yesterday.
It now seems that I have two things in common with Richard.
We are/were both computational number theorists.

And two hours ago I was formally diagnosed with leukemia.

I am undergoing tests to determine the type.

Incidentally, it's the prominent "sourcerer degeneration sign" in Strugatsky brothers' "Monday starts on Saturday" (1961); first it is explained to the reader and then some inside jokes are sprinkled later in the novel. If/when this happens, in the novel, a person should rethink their life before too late... or leave. There are some who try to stay on the job -- but the razor blade marks are obvious on their ears and they become uninteresting to anyone soon after.

I hope you get better, if that's any consolation.
And two hours ago I was formally diagnosed with leukemia. I am undergoing tests to determine the type.
That comes as a real shock. Not as much to me as it must have been to you, obviously, but still.

I'm hoping that your tests and subsequent treatments help you cope well with your newly learned situation.

All the best!

Paul

One: Apathy. Two: Forgetfulness. We cannot remember number three, but we don't give a damn!
That is a wonderful saying, but a bit misogynistic  like all the discussion after it, too (about the hairs, :mally:). It is valid only for men (me including!). Women will gain more and more interest (contra-apathy, how you call it in English?) as they get older.

That is bitter news. I hope you make a speedy and full recovery, Bob.

Very best wishes. I wish you every strength in fighting this.

@RDS: This is indeed bitter news. The mother life is a bitch. We wish you strength to fight with it, and fast recovery.
