Now that summer is almost here, my room struggles to stay below 77f with all my CPUs and GPUs running, what do I do? Hibernate from GIMPS for half a year? lol
1. window unit air conditioner.
2. undervolt/underclock a bit; 15% less speed might be 25% less power, if your systems have enough settings available.
3. Turn off the least work-per-watt machine for summer; I have an old Core 2 system that runs only 3-4 months a year as a room heater that happens to find a prime once in a while.

We are not allowed to have window AC only window fan, we do have central ac but it doesn't do much since I live on the top floor

I think I'm gonna turn off all the computers when I'm at home, and have them run while I'm in school ... my office is also hot at the moment since my building still has heat on :bangheadonwall:

Get one of these : https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-ARC-12SD-Conditioner-Dehumidifier-Activated/dp/B003MQBYYU/
Seriously, the dual-hose models work well - much better than the single-hose models. Of course, being in the midwest, you will want to put a drip pan underneath it...

That's basically what I have to do. Electricity costs more in the summer too.

Yeah, sadly I have to quit GIMPS for the summer and will be back in the fall lol.

I am not going to say stupid things like "I'm sure the amount of contribution I made is nothing compared to the rest (which is true mathematically speaking) so it is perfectly fine for me to hibernate half a year" but someone is gonna start hunting me down and yell "if everyone thinks like you this project would not be what it is."

I guess the best thing I can do is run them while I am not at home once in a while.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Any and all contributions you make are valuable and welcome. Taking some time off is no big deal.
I cut back my machines in summer for the same reason.

VBCurtis approach (post #1354) looks very sensible. You don't have to shut the whole farm down, just cut the heat dissipation as needed.

I'm gonna try to have some of my machine running when it's not too hot. I am greedy for those ghz days bragging rights lolol

Lol I didn't realize that this thread has that many posts. I am leaving my computer running at night when it's sufficiently cold and during the day when I'm not home. That should do that trick, at least before summer is finally here. :yucky:

Now, a fast switch of gears, another "unhappy me story" lol (maybe my life is just depressing)

I backed out of a parking lot, got honked by a police officer because he was there, and he turned around and issued me a citation for "unsafe backing". Do you guys think I should be outraged he is being a douche or he has the moral ground for issuing me that citation? :picard:

Definitely not outraged; if his honk was what prevented you from hitting him, it seems you deserve a ticket. Without seeing it all unfold, it's pretty tough to make any sort of general judgement.

IMO, police officers have one of the hardest jobs imaginable. No one likes them, except when they need them. And they can be killed while simply doing their job.

You say you were only given a citation. No big deal. If you think the "cop" was wrong, take it to court and argue the facts.

Be thankful you have that right....

There was like 1 or 2 car spaces between us, he wasn't right behind where I am backing to. It's kind of arguable unless we see the dashcam. At first I told myself "oh I totally deserve that ticket I backed into him" but then couple of my colleagues at school told me that this is bs I started feeling outraged lol. Either I am a bad story teller (with bias) or my colleagues are too nice.

Yeah true, the police deals with all kind of stuff and their life is sometimes in danger, I guess I was being a little harsh.

The ticket is issued by the university police so it's not a lot (~40 dollars) so there is no court, only a "university committee" appeal lol.

Anytime when I felt being treated unfairly I start getting worked up. I probably should get over this, nothing is rea;;y fair in life and it's too short to worry about minor things like this.
