Does your UPS have a USB or serial port that will carry a signal to your machine to gracefully shut dow? I know the 2 most common brands, APC and [STRIKE]Cyberdyne[/STRIKE] err Cyberpower have that feature.
I used that feature on a different UPS in the past and it was too hungry for CPU cycles. I haven't tried it since.
We had a countywide power outage last night for a little over an hour. They said it was some sort of problem with a major substation.
<snip>
The UPS has an audible alarm but it was too far away for me to hear.
I can understand this if you mean to say the power went out after you'd turned in, and the UPS alarm was too far away to rouse you out of a sound sleep.

I mean otherwise, speaking for myself, when I've had the power go out after dark when I was still up, I would sort of notice that the lights had gone out...

Yes it was after I had gone to bed.
Yes it was after I had gone to bed.
Hmm. With me, an alarm that would wake me out of a sound sleep might require some thought. Probably some repeating, staccato high-pitched squawk or shriek. And, it would have to be nearby.

I have, on occasion, had people ask me, "Did you hear all that thunder last night?" and had to answer "No, slept right through it." When I got up I saw it had rained overnight, of course...

The little alarm I bought sounds a continuing series of three high-pitched beeps (and the led light comes on). I plugged it in in the bedroom.

Sounds good. I hope it works. But I also hope you don't need to find out any time soon...

My home's wifi router is dead (can't turn it on) .The ethernet cable connection still work. Support will do an exchange ( I have all the information they require, so shouldn't pose a problem), but they require me to go to a brick and mortar store for it. What make me unhappy is that it will likelly take all my morning. and I have an occulist appointment early in the afternoon. IF i can't wait

Uncwilly 2019-04-06 21:23

Oculist or occultist? I couldn't see your post well and get those terms mixed up.

firejuggler 2019-04-06 21:27
