server reporting a new prime found. ???

Hi,

subjectline says it all. Could of course be a malicious report of a client redoing an old prime.

At least it's not in cleared.txt, but IIRC something has been done to avoid a prime shows up on the server.

correct

Does anyone know what the exponent is or at least an aproximation of it and how soon it can be verified ?

Prime95 2003-06-01 15:33

Woo hoo! It looks like the 40th Mersenne prime has been found. It is larger than M13466917, but it is not a 10 million digit prime.

It will take at least a few weeks to verify. I've just emailed Ernst Mayer to see if he is interested.

Preliminary congratulations to all! All GIMPS testers are an integral part of this find.

Any more hints?

Did this person crunch for a team or an individual cruncher?

The prime was found in the last couple of days I presume?

xtreme2k 2003-06-01 16:37

What is normally used to verify the results? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

jeff8765 2003-06-01 16:44

George, will you at least tell us what time the prime was found, and whether it was found today or yesterday.

The prime was found today by a long-time individual cruncher.

Traditionally we use a different program and different hardware to verify the prime. This eliminates program and hardware bugs as a cause of a bogus prime discovery. Ernst's mlucas and gbvalor's glucas are perfect candidates for the verification.

Time to start up our old hobby of guessing which exponent was reported as prime. Who makes the best guess based on the available information?

trif 2003-06-01 20:46

I know what it is. But I will respect the need not to reveal until the verification is done.
