... upon reading that, you think "Thank goodness the machines were saved."

Better would be a nehalem 12 core server system ;).

I'm bringing this post about a oil-immersed system back to the foreground, since I just found a company that has begun producing retail versions of an oil-immersed system:
http://www.hardcorecomputer.com

There's a good article about it here:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/hardcorepc_reactor

The article says that prices range $4k to $11k. The base price on the website is $5560, and that includes:
Core2 Extreme QX9650
4GB DDR3 (speed not listed!)
GeForce GTX 260
750GB hard drive
Pioneer DVD burner
32-bit Vista Ultimate

Of course, if you're really addicted, you'd leave out 2 of the SSD's, both of the hard drives, Vista Ultimate (replace it with Linux instead), the GPU's and the fancy monitors, keyboard, mouse, speakers and headphones, and use all that money to pick up one or two more machines for even more crunch power. (Removing all the goodies that don't add raw computing power will also serve to deter you from using the machine for other things, which would sap too much CPU time.)

You can get a Mac Pro that costs twice as much if you go for the max options. Dual 3.2 GHZ Xeons, 32GB FBDIMM memory, 4x1TB harddrives in a RAID array, Nvidia Quadra FX 5600, dual 30" flat panels, and a bunch of other expensive software and networking addons.

The retail version of Vista Ultimate ships with both 32-bit and 64-bit media.
64-bit DVD

If you bought Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, or Business as a retail, packaged product, and you would like a DVD of 64-bit software media to install on your PC, please choose your language:

Note: 64-bit media is included in the box with Windows Vista Ultimate.
Browsing the dual-boxing.com forums is a quick way to find dozens of pictures of setups with 6 monitors.
6 seems to be the most you can fit comfortably on a desk.

Here's a quick example:
