M44 poster.
Hello,
I propose to dedicate this thread to discussing which kind of poster could be proposed for M44. Discussion has started on Mersenne mailing list saying that it seems VERY difficult to print all digits of M44 on the poster so that it is still readable. Must we break down the current "Mersenne poster" process and propose a new solution ? Tony |
Proposals 1), 2) and 3).
Since it is sad to need to read the notes at the bottom of the poster in order to know which number it is, I suggest 3 proposals :
1) Print only a reduced number of all the digits around the name (M44) and exact formula (2^32....-1) of the number. 2) CHANGE THE BASE ! Why still using base 10 ? With base 16, there are only 8145665 characters (0..9A..F) With base 32, ................... 6516532 .............. (0..9A..V) With base 64, ................... 5430443 .............. (0..9A..ZGreekletters...) This way, it is still printable (but not easily understandable ...) 3) Forget the digits and print: - M44, 2^32....-1, - the magic LLT theorem - the tree (with the 3 roots) and the number of cycles of length L dividing q-1 built by the LLT - a picture of Mersenne monk, of E. Lucas, and of D. Lehmer, - the name and signatures of discoverers and of George, and maybe verifiers - the list of all previous Mersenne primes, plus "who discovered which and when". - a log graph showing the progression of Mersenne primes - a time graph showing when Mersenne primes appeared since the beginning. This way, people will stop asking me why I've bought a gray poster and if it is modern art !! tony |

binary is an excellent suggestion : one black dot for a one, a white for a zero and you obtain a BLACK poster whose area is exactly related to the mersenne number (depending on your printer dpi's)....

Why limit M44 to one poster ?
Spread the number and the explanation over 4 posters ! Or have wallpaper made with the number (it would not be an easy job to put it on the wall whithout leaving any part out :-( |

How about printing it in base-M44? That would leave plenty of space for explanations etc., and the layout could be re-used for future primes with minimal modifications... :whistle:
