On a brand new Core2 duo system E6600 on an Asus P5W DH Deluxe, I'm getting Motherboard at 45C and processor at 53C, with 2 prime95 instances running. Stock fan used, no overclocking (for the time being  )
And what software do you use to read temperatures? PC-probe?

JC 2006-09-07 19:58

Yes, Asus pcprobe II, on the cd-rom provided with the motherboard.

It doesn't report actual CPU temperature, it's more like a reading from some external sensor. In my case it reports 43C whereas it is actually 56C - try the "Core Temp" software and see for yourself.

After doing a bit of reading, it appears there are 2 sets of temperature readings involving the CPU. One set is the traditional analog diode placed near the cpu. The others are 2x digital diodes that actually form part of the cpu silicon.

Core temp displays the digital diodes (one for each core), where as the motherboard utilities display the measurement from old analog diode.

With stock voltages/cooling/frequency, running 2x prime95 instances you should be getting a temperature close to 60degC from core-temp. (I've typically seen 57-59degC in various forums)

Intel has also made a utility to display the temp from the digital diodes:

From running various utilities it appears my motherboard is over-volting the CPU and hence causing more power consumption and heat than normally.

I bought a water cooling kit:

Temps are now 39-41degC with 2x prime95 torture tests runnig.

Very happy camper. Going to leave it over night to verify stability.

Nucleon&Cruelty, thanks for your tips.
Core temp gives me 67° for both cores, which is a bit high, I admit.
I don't think it's an issue (no errors after torture tests), until I start.. boosting the beast.

What are your settings to have such low temp? I always get 59-63*C with dual Prime95. If you don't mind, please post your settings (vcore, vdimm,FSB,NB,....). Thanks.

You too got a water cooling kit?

Yup .. Using Corsair Nautilus 500 but replaced stock fan with SILVERSTONE FM121 120mm 2 Ball Case Cooling Fan (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811999344), also lapped water block just a little bit.

Vcore cannot go below 1.500v(in BIOS) ..... Currently set at 1.525v (BIOS --- 1.96+v in window)...
