Core2Duos - temperature
 

What temperatures are people seeing when running prime95 on Core2Duos?

I have a self-built core2duo E6600 with gigabyte DQ6 and Geil 5-5-5-15@800MHz DDR2 RAM.

With 2x instances of prime95 one running the blend test (3rd torture test), and the other running "In-place large FFTs" (the 2nd test) I get 76-81degC CPU temp.

But with only one instance I'm getting 60-64degC. One instance has been stable (14hrs done so far), but the other instance has died of varying time frames (11mins and then 7.5hrs).

I've redone the application of the heatsink once already. Just curious to see what temps other people are getting.

Yep, I've done a bit of googling. Found this link:

Where one guy stated he was getting high 70s with 2x instances of prime95.

What CPU cooler do you use?
I was running E6600 @ 3GHz, and blend test passed without any error for 20+ hours on both cores. However when I switched to large FFT test, both instances failed after several minutes. I had to increase voltages on both CPU and MCH + reduce speed to 2.9GHz to obtain stability. I am running now at 59C using Titan Vanessa-L Cooler. Today I will replace it with Scythe Infinity and try to break the 3GHz barrier onc more time :smile:

Can I ask what motherboard you have?

I discovered when I ran 2x blend tests (the default), 1x core was at 100% (the instance I clicked first) and the other core was at 10%.

So I thought that wasn't a suitable burn-in. So I ran the large FFT in one instance and blend tests is the other instance. And that's when the temps hit the roof.

I downladed that app to read temps - and the temps it reported were higher than the previous app used (gigabyte easytune that came with the mboard)

I'm looking to get a better heatsink. But due to the inbuild heat sink on the underside of the board - it's proving abit difficult to locate something I can use.

All the figure below, were done using everything at the default - default cpu fan, default CPU speed etc...

I'm using Asus P5W-DH Deluxe motherboard.
Indeed Gigabyte has placed some cooling on the rear side of the CPU socket, so you have to choose a cooler like Scythe Infinity that will not interfere with the back of the motherboard :smile:
And as for the Core Temp utility, I've read that it is one of the few that porperly report actual Core2 temperatures.

Flatmate has E6600 and asus P5B-delux board at stock speeds. He gets 57-59degC using the same applications/version/settings I did. The temp was measured from the application on your link.

Grumble grumble.

So that rules out environmental effects.

Machine is currently in pieces awaiting delivery of new heatsink.

With a stock CPU cooler, and running nominal voltages, you should get CPU temperatures in the upper 40's to mid 50's. Some mobo makers seem to have done weird things with the thermal outputs, making finding accurate temperatures harder than it should be. [url=http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=3&lang=en]Lavalys Everest[/url] is one product that plays well with most motherboards. The trial version works for a couple of months and gives detailed system information. You will get nag dialogs and not all values are shown, but temperatures are. The default screen does not show disk temperatures in trial mode. Run the "System Stability Test" (Tools menu) and all temps are visible.

On a brand new Core2 duo system E6600 on an Asus P5W DH Deluxe, I'm getting Motherboard at 45C and processor at 53C, with 2 prime95 instances running. Stock fan used, no overclocking (for the time being :whistle: )
