Speed Problem continues
My monitor plug into the motherboard.
with the system memory listed in my last message what should my memory settings in the BIOS be set to? or does it autodetect? What RAM setting should I have prime95 use out of 512meg total? I have had it set a different amounts with no change in interation times. I don't believe the memory is the issue. Would just trying a PCI standard video card change anything as far as making more CPU cycles available? I don't see how many are being used by the Video since nothing is being used but Prime95 (no other programs, screen saver and monitor set to 16bit 256 color) Clyde83 |
Does your motherboard have an AGP slot?
To answer your minimum specification problem, I would play with your onboard graphics settings and see how windows responds to the software you use and then get a graphics card with at least the lowest level of RAM Windows and applications do well... |
Yes I do have a AGP slot.
Do you believe switching the video from onboard to a seperate card will improve this speed difference with crunching times? I'd hate to induce some new problem that I don't have right now only issue that appears to be is the interation times are slower than what everyone says they should be. I even found a way to disable video acceleration it was set for full speed but that didn't change any interation times. System holding dead steady at 0.136sec/per interation and when switched to safe mode went back up to 0.152 sec. What are the FFT sizes about I noticed and read that the bigger the Prime exponent the bigger the FFT? I do not follow the math issues on this project but do enjoy the challenge and find very long term projects like this one quite interesting although I'm Math Challenged in most areas past Algebra and Geomentry. I wish there was a FAQ in layman's terms about the math of the prime search and why this type of prime is important and the likes, maybe something about how the computers process these large numbers ect... Thanks |

[/QUOTE] Maybe you could borrow a PCI or 1.5v AGP card of, say, 4Mb at least. DO NOT USE A 3.3v AGP. Just test in "safe mode". They should be cheap to pick up second hand -- 32Mb or more. Windows will run better with an AGP card. (I'll leave a proper explaination of FFT to experts. Basically, numbers are transformed into another space where multiplcaton is cheaper and the result transformed back. "FFT sizes" arise from doing this with computers efficiently.) |
Yes it will make that much of a difference. A cheap AGP card like a Radeon 7200 is $30 new so it should not be hard to find for $10 or so used.
