Problem with the Tray Icon under Win 98
George: I think this may have been mentioned in the Lounge, but this seems the best place to go into this problem in detail. I hope this information helps you get to the bottom of this...
Since upgrading to version 22.8 of Prime95, the tray icon does not stay hidden as it should (and indeed as it used to in version 21). For the record, I recently did an "upgrade in situ" by just replacing the prime95.exe file and deleting the httpnet.dll file. The original options were for "No icon" and "Start at bootup", and these remained selected after the upgrade, but the tray icon appears whenever a user has logged in. I have tried deselecting the "No icon" option and reselecting it while Prime95 is running and is makes no change, whether or not you minimise the app's window afterwards. The thing of note is that this behaviour only occurs when Prime95 has been started by the "Start at bootup" sequence. If you exit (to stop Prime95 completely) and restart Prime95 by double-clicking its exe file, the "No icon" behaviour returns to normal. This makes me wonder whether the running of Prime95 as a service is somehow at fault. Also interesting is that if you boot up (having previously selected "No icon"), after the icon has appeared in the system tray and you have opened the window, if you choose "Tray icon" nothing happens, but if you then choose "No icon" again the icon disappears from its usual position in the tray for a split second and reappears in a different position on the right-hand end of the tray icons, just as an icon for a newly-started app usually does. You might also be interested to know that when Prime95 has been first started by the "Start at bootup" option, the very first right-click of the tray icon wrongly offers the "Minimize Window" option, even though there is no window visible, and nothing happens. The next right-click correctly offers the "Open Window" option (which works). I am running version 22.8.1 of Prime95 under Windows 98SE on several PCs. These are on a NetWare network, using the Microsoft Client for Novell Networks on some PCs and the Novell Client on others. It would really help to be able to keep the client invisible on all PCs as this is one of Prime95's greatest selling points, so if you are able to do anything about this issue, I for one would be really grateful. |
OK,
Even though George is probably the best one to answer this q, my guess is your problem is because of the difference in the way "Start at bootup" has been implemented in v21 and 22. Look at you Prime.ini filke and you'll likely find a line saying Startup or Win95Service or something like that. Remove it, reboot, set star at bootup, reboot and see if that does the trick. |

Start at bootup should be identical to v21 for Windows 95/98/Me. It is radically different for Windows Nt/2K/XP. |
Found the problem. It will be fixed in 22.9.

Amazing! :surprised: Thanks George. This is one of the reasons why I love GIMPS so much: the support is unparalleled. If only support could be this responsive in commercially available software... [/me tries not to sound impatient or pushy.] Do you have any idea when this new version will be available? ;) |
I've uploaded a preliminary ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v229.zip
Please try it only if you need the hide icon fix or want to try the new PauseWhileRunning feature. I'm still investigating some setup bugs and a proxy password problem. |
/Me remains impressed at George's speed of response!
