One interesting characteristic of the 845GL chipset is it will not tolerate ECC memory at all... In the past I have run ECC memory in most of my motherboards and usually, if they could not use it, they'd ignore it... That is not the case with the 845GL... It will POST but it will not go any further... The 845GL also has the ICH4 southbridge which means USB 2.0 and some other goodies... The onboard video is actually pretty good and doesn't slow down things too much, like previous integrated video solutions did... I run a regular video card though... |
SIS645DX, DDR333 2.5/3/3/7/2 Annoyingly, my 4096K times seem to run between 270 and 276ms, based on the alignment of the planets. It's not a large difference, but the randomness and sub-optimality of it pisses me off. |
I noticed something similar with my KG7-R / Athlon 1400 and a lower range FFT.
Sometimes, it seems to be running fast at optimum speed and sometimes, it's a bit slower (a few ms). This can change while the PC is running for nearly no reason (but after I use the PC). If I start from a fresh boot, it can be either "slow" or "fast". I then run some programs and let Prime95 run again by itself and sometimes it gets better. And vice versa. I have no explication for this behavior. Taskinfo doesn't show anything special. Maybe the program interacts differently with the cache ? I have no idea. Anyone noticed this ? |
I think the benchmark should run a bit longer than it does... It is so short right now that any activity on the box will make the result invalid... If it ran each FFT size for maybe one to five minutes it would average out all these irregularities... What I do now is run the benchmark a few times and take the best one...

Hi! I know that curiosity killed the cat, but here in Italy is virtually impossible to find some sticks of PC1066 memory: so, where didi you find 'em? Thanks! Daffy: I do notice this. It isnt the heat causing the thermo throttling of the P4. It ALSO happens on an Athlon XP system that I have.
I got the CPU, MOBO and Memory in Hong Kong :) They are Kingston PC1066 ECC. |

If you want Intel its Intel all the way. Their memory performance tends to be poor compared to Intel's solution, which the Prime software heavily depends on. |

You could try getting more aggresive with your memory settings - my XP1800+/KT7A went from about .252 to .237 (10,000,000 digit exponents, 1792K FFT) per iteration just by switching from "sdram 8/10" (AKA slow default) and CAS 3 to "normal" and CAS 2. I tried the "fast" and "turbo" memory settings, but they made the machine very unstable - though they also got the iteration timings down to around .222 at fastest settings. Best bet would be to push the FSB and memory settings as high as you can get them to go, *dropping* the CPU clock multiplier if you have to, while keeping a close eye on the stability of the machine. Prime is VERY memory-intensive - one of the reasons P4s beat Athlons on it (SSE2 is a bigger reason, from what I've seen). |

XP1800+ on a Asus A7V333 pulling about 1833 Mhz (actual clock) on 166 FSB at 11 multiplier. 1792k FFT down around .188 - and I don't think I've found the limit on the FSB yet (total clock limit on this CPU seems to be around 1850-1860ish). Also runs 5 degrees C or a little more COOLER even when overclocking 10+% faster than I ever managed to get a Palomino XP1800+ up to.... I'll have the actual benchmarks posted sometime later this week - still finalizing some stuff on that machine. |

I suspect some sort of divider in the BIOS/chipset that's non-configurable is kicking in at over 175Mhz FSB and slowing the RAM access down. Well, i benched my new i875 system at work today (MSI NEO board bios 1.5 - 2*TwinX512CorsairXMS3200LL@2-3-3-6).
If i am not totally mistaken, i got a 70ms bench on the 2048FFT with V23.4 at only 2.86GHz (P4C2.6) with DDR-420. Using the i875 with DDR-400 and a 3.1GHz clock (5:4 mem) i got a 68ms on the 2048FFT. Reading the numbers here i cannot believe it. I try to post the full bench data tomorrow if i did not dream it hehe ;) I use the Intel boxed stock air cooling solution and i really don't want to increase vcore to get some more Megahurts - that box should last 3 years to work with. Uh, Trif?
(Not being critical, just curious) Is there a reason you are not running version 23.5 on your Barton? George says "Improvements for Athlon, Duron, Pentium 3, and Celeron 2 owners! You can expect up to 3-8% faster iteration times compared to version 23.4! " |
Cuz I run factoring (for which there is no difference) and I'm lazy. ;)
I'll upgrade so I don't have to listen to the guys over at TPR moan about not having a proper benchmark. :D |
Trif, could you please re-run the benchmark on 23.5/23.6? It's interesting to see if the 512KB cache of the Athlon actually made any difference to Prime95.
Cheers! |

Xyzzy, how are you getting a 3200+ rating with a speed of only 2090?
BTW, I only have one stick of memory, so my benchies don't reflect the dual channel capabilities of the NForce2 chipset. Now if I could just figure out why the torture test is failing the 64K FFT and only the 64K FFT. |

Maybe somewhere in your system the CPU is recognized as 3200+ or reported so by the BIOS.

Now if I could just figure out why the torture test is failing the 64K FFT and only the 64K FFT.
Maybe it has something to do with the AMD's 64K L1? (Just guessing here!)
Surely not. 64K means 64K double values, not bytes. |
That's interesting....
How come Prime95 benchmark sometimes reports the CPU model number and sometimes it doesn't? Mine only said "AMD Athlon(TM)" while some of you guys are getting "AMD Athlon(TM) XP 1800+ (Thoroughbred)" (as an example). |
I think it has to do with what the BIOS says. The (Thoroughbred) may have been added by the poster to distinguish it from a Palomino. With a Barton you can tell by the cache size.

Well, technically, Pakaran and I are supposed to be doing that...
I've had two separate people look into coding a database for all of it, but both people have failed to deliver... I suppose once I get caught up with some stuff I'll try to get that page updated... I think Pakaran is real busy with his school work... In the meantime at least people can see the benchmarks here... I know it isn't an optimal solution... :( |

I've had this exact same issue on my P4 (Willamette423, 1.5GHz, 1GB/DDR266) when its doing long LL tests. Seems to be an unlucky sequence of cache misses, possibly caused by Windows not cleaning out its own caches properly. I normally get iteration times of around 138ms, but lately I've had nearer to 145ms. Across 30 million iterations, it adds up fast. I really do think its from cache pollution, tho. You might try turning off as many system services as possible, I've noticed it minimizes the problem. |

Prime95 is the only program yet i benched with that totally shut out the processor. Prime95's optimizations obviously don't go well with this processor :innocent:. With every thing else i tested with so far, it actually performs like a 600mhz celeron. |
Anandtech should have included VIA CPUs in their value CPU roundup. And BTW Intel should think over their Celeron pricing.
Does someone have a Via Nehemia available for testing? I think Prime95 will run much better on it than on Samuel and other predecessors. The FPU has been overhauled and offered about twice the speed (AFAIR). |
Current generation of Celeron has been crippled way too much.
Cache too small, FSB too slow... |
For comparison, my K6-400 iterates at 1792K at just over 3000 ms. Or a hair better per Mhz than the C3 800.
The K6 was well known for POOR FP performance in it's day - it ran the FPU at half CPU clock speed being the main reason why. The Nemiah will have to do a lot more than 2x the performance to even match the P-III based Celerons on FP per Mhz (my BP6 dual-Celeron 600s run 1000-1250 ms, depending on what the other CPU is doing), much less anything current. |

AFAIK the K6 didn't have a FPU at half CPU clock speed, but it was not pipelined. The latency was smaller than on a P5/P6 but without pipelining throughput=latency, thus higher than on a pipelined FPU. BTW the 3DNow! units were pipelined with a throughput of up to 2 FP ops/cycle. The K6 Optimization manual didn't give numbers ( I have one at home which has them) but http://www.sysopt.com/k6-fpu.html says: On the AMD K6, it takes the FPU 2 cycles to complete the important instructions - FADD, FSUB, FMUL - the Pentiums, despite the higher latency of 3 - can effectively do them in one cycle if the code is well optimized. And I think the often used FXCH was not free on K6. The Cyrix and Centaur CPUs and most successors had a half speed partially pipelined FPU - which has been turned into a full speed fully pipelined FPU with Nehemiah. |
Ive noticed on a fresh boot of winXp prime95 will be slighly slower...after loading up a game for a few seconds and then exiting it seems to clear out whatever was holding it up. It then drops back down to normal timings. Shrug

Pentium M (Centrino) Benchmarks

TYPE: Pentium M (centrino) SPEED: 1.7 GHz L2 Cache: 1024 KB L2 speed: Full, same as CPU Memory 333 MHz DDR SRAM (PC2700) OS: Windows XP PRO This is a laptop system and according to Intel is supposed to be equivalent in CPU power to a P4 2.6 GHz. I also have a P4 2.6 GHz machine that is actually much faster then the P M 1.7 GHz The P M 1.7 GHz has a 2048k benchmark of 206.587 The P 4 2.6 GHz has a 2048k of 81.721 So why is the P4 is much faster?? or the P M so much slower?? I have check the speedstep function and the CPU is running at the full 1.7 GHZ Maybe the PRIME software is more optimized for the P4 than the P M. Also, are there "CPU heat" concerns with running Prime on my Dell 8600 laptop? |

Read this thread for more info concerning Pentium-M and Prime95. The main reason is, that the FPU hasn't been improved a lot over P3s (surely due to power saving reasons) and even if it would have a thoughput like P4 or Athlon it would be limited by clockspeed. SSE2 has been implemented and the capability of parallel FMUL/FADD. The not so fast L2 cache is another reason. I'm sure that heat won't become an issue with Pentium-M if the laptop has a good fan. At work the fan of a Dell laptop with P4-M became noisy after the machine was running at 100% CPU for several weeks. But I'm sure there are also companies which build quality notebooks... |
