prime95 v28.1. i3930K at 4.2GHz, 8x4GB @ 1600MHz (DDR3 1600, CL9, 1.35V), Corsair H100. 169 days uptime (we moved). Fedora 16. Built in April 2012, used prime95 and other programs to ensure good overclocking and temps. I love this machine, though it does generate quite a bit of heat when going full bore. I don't like core temps to go above 60C when all cores are loaded.

I use it for lots of other development, not prime95, so I keep hyperthreading on since it's helpful on almost every other application. I'm not going to reboot to turn it off, but I did try setting CpuNumHyperthreads=1 in local.txt (turning it of in the BIOS would be a better comparison). The small FFTs were consistently slower on the 1-thread version, but once past 1024K it seemed to make little difference. On the other hand the 6-core 8192K FFT result was slightly faster with a 10.020 average.

The reason you are struggling to keep below 60C these days is because they aren't designed for that. They are designed for much higher these days. 80C might be a good aim these days. My CPU would die from that heat though(Q6600 G0).

I wouldn't call it struggling -- it's running at 4.2GHz vs. stock 3.2GHz. My 3770K is also 4.2GHz (3.5 stock so pretty tame) and I have it running a little hotter. 60C for BOINC climate prediction, ~68C for Prime95 small FFT torture test. I could go higher but extreme OC isn't as important to me as stability and reasonable power use (measuring with a Kill-a-watt, once past the easy overclocking I saw power use go up dramatically with every small rise in core speed).

Lots of heat: using the UPS to measure, the whole system (monitor off) is 159W idle, 286W prime95 blend, 376W small FFT test. My perl/GMP work at the moment gets it to 326W.

Looks like the Q6600 G0 that this replaced was at 3.2GHz and 50C. The Q6600B3 in my spouse's computer (still chugging along after 6 years) only got to 3.0GHz before hitting 60C.

Justifying the power bills to an environmentalist spouse is the real trick :).

Here's my daughter's machine I put together last night: i5-4670 3.4GHz using stock cooler, completely default settings. 93C (!) on small FFT stress test, and I'd hate to see it in the afternoon when that room is 10+ degrees hotter. 2x4GB RAM (DDR3, 1600MHz, CL9, 1.5V), Asus Z87M-Plus uATX MB, Windows 8.
