Some overclocked scores.

Note: The machine at this speed, is definately NOT stable. I report this for pure curiousity. Core2 Duo E6600 @ 9.0x400MHZ, ram is 5-5-5-15@800MHz. Motherboard was gigabyte DQ6. CPU voltage in bios was set to 1.4375V.

D830

I achieved this on a D830 whithout fiddling a lot. But now I am running at a more conservative 3450 MHz : a temperature rising to 80 °C is not good to keep for long ;-) Even at a moderate 3450 MHZ more than 150W has to be transfered away via the cooler.

I think about swapping the D830 for a D950 (with the coming of the Core 2 Duos they are cheapper.) The main incentive is energy conservation : the D830 gobbles electricity to change it to heat and as a byproduct you get some calculations, the D950 has a 95 W thermal design compared to the 130 W of the D830.

IMO the performance should be expressed by W. Then it is possibly the laptops that will be top of the mark.

E6300 Overclock -- 4096k @ 75ms for $200!

Wow -- I haven't dabbled much in overclocking since the Celeron 300A to 450Mhz overclock was popular. Before that it was a bevy of 486-75s that I ran at 100 (man, they kicked butt at assignments in the ~90000 range :P) but I had to give it a try with my new Core 2 Duo E6300. This is a CPU that can be had for around $200 these days. I stuck it on a Gigabyte P965-DS3 and added 2x512MB of Patriot DDR2-800 memory. Total cost under $500 for the CPU, memory, and motherboard!

Anyway, here're results running with the memory at 950 (475), running 4-4-4-12! This puts the CPU at around 3330Mhz, compared to stock 1.86Mhz. This is all with plain old heatsink + fan cooling, at default voltage on the CPU, but 2.0V on the DDR2. Even with only 2MB of L2 cache, the chip does very well. 60 minutes of torture testing have completed so far without error.

Is using overclocked machines for doublechecking assignments only considered okay these days?
Is using overclocked machines for doublechecking assignments only considered okay these days?
Some might prefer to see a fast system do first-time tests, but where's the line between an OCed not-so-fast CPU and a fast CPU? I think it's okay. It'd take a whole buncha OCs to make DC catch up noticeably close to first-time.

And, as I've pointed out elsewhere, your choice doesn't matter one way or another to GIMPS progress. We can use all contributions, large or small, in any work category. It's far more important not to poach a GIMPS assignment (which may dishearten the assignee) than it is to steer a CPU of any speed toward or away from a particular work category. If GIMPS administrators think contributions are "out of balance", there are ways of rebalancing while still allowing all participants free choice of work type, as long as a substantial fraction of participants use the default choice of "whatever makes sense".

(Personally I prefer to see an OC torture-tested at least 50 hours without errors before trusting it with any GIMPS assignment, but I'm known to be picky.)

This part of your response gets more to what I was intending to ask... that is, it seems to me that the risk of bad data being contributed by an overclocked machine is significantly lower if it is used only for doublechecking.

Besides, when DC work catches up to first time checking, that just means it's time to start full-scale triple checking :) In fact, I've been wondering if that would be a reasonable feature to try to get in to PrimeNet v5/Prime95 v25: the option to use glucas or other code on a "triplecheck" assignment using a Prime95 client with both the prime95 and glucas LL code incorporated.

Here are the results from a machine that has given me fits. At times it is good, at times it slows down.

on a 1024K FFT number it was turning out 0.252-0.273 iterations
Mersenne.org says this machine should turn out 0.271
After stopping the test, running the bench, restarting, it is now running 0.33's

Sometimes I can exit p95 and restart to drop it back down, but often I have to reboot to get it back down.
