Have the remaining composites taken enough ECM punishment? I just pulled a p40 out of one -- more of a "dang" than a true ECM miss, IMO -- but I'm curious if I should pause my sieving on the 204-digit SNFS I'm doing and munch away for a few days at B1 = 11e6 or 43e6 just to be safe. |

It's hard to tell from here but my feeling is that ECM is still very much worth while. Several factors are being found each week by the ECMNET clients and, I believe, it's still allocating at the B1=3M level. I'll be able to find out more when I get back home in a few days. Paul |

Are you considering more ECM on the 5+4 number you've reserved? That batch of numbers has received more ECM work than the newest batch. I'm sure it's been tested to 40-digits, but Paul may be able to tell you if it finished a t45. When I was working on the 7's, 8's, and 9's in the SNFS 155-185 range from October to December I found a p42, p43, 2 p44s, p46, p48, p49, and 27 penultimates between p51 and p74. |

Thanks. If 5,4,292+ were a little smaller, I wouldn't bother with ECM, but since sieving time will be substantial, I'm putting 2500 B1=43e6 curves into it. The thought of doing all that sieving just to pull a p45 is too depressing. Your results jibe with what I would have guessed, both from my limited contribution to the ECMNET work on this and my own recent SNFS stuff. They have done enough to get most of the p40-p43 factors, but some certainly remain, and there are probably quite a few p44-p48 factors left. I'm mostly concerned about smaller numbers (SNFS 177) I just reserved. Since ECM is surprisingly good at finding larger factors and missing middling ones, I'll do a p40 run on these before I start. |

I'll be able to find out more when I get back home in a few days. Paul
I'm now back home and have started processing an update. The ECMNET server has reported 7 factors in the 13 days since the previous update. The server is loaded with the base 10, 11 and 12 tables and it would appear that for these numbers at least running ECM is still worthwhile. Updated tables will be posted within the next hour or so. Those numbers factored ectopically will be removed from the ECMNET server shortly. Paul |
