Intel has slashed prices (upto 50%) on existing CPUs
to clear an inventory buildup in anticipation of the new line of CPUs.

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/05/05/intel_price_cuts/

The most recent round of cuts saw the Pentium D 950's price fall from $637 to $316, a drop of 50 per cent. The 940 now costs $241, down 43 per cent from $423. The 930's price fell 34 per cent, from $316 to $209, which is also what the 920 now costs - its price dropped 13 per cent from $241.

The world record is for SuperPI 1M digits was
Pentium 4 670 massively overclocked to 7.2Ghz
17+ seconds (high 17s) slightly slower than Yonah listed above.
WAS is the correct word ;)
Pentium4 record is AFAIK medium 16s (16.3 propably) running @7.5+ GHz ;)
Pentium (Yonah Core) did 15.95s while running @3.84GHz (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=98164)
4MB Conroe running @3.1GHz did 16.1s

btw.: other programs for Pi calculation can do the job a magnitude faster on more relaxed clock rates ;)

The times just keep getting better !

All the more impressive is the Conroe time.

A Conroe speedgrade is supposed to be released at just below 3 Ghz
later this year, so the 3.1 Ghz could be done
on air with just a good standard cooler (heatsink and fan).

I don't know/can't remember if the 2.13 OC Conroe was on air.
Uh, raise your hand if you are running 64-bit Windows.... I don't see many hands raised
Another one raised... but only temporarily. I just installed it on my new Opteron 165 (running at 2.6GHz :flex:), but I'll probably go back to XP Pro for various reasons, including things like AVG and some games not playing nice with x64

I waited for someone else to mention it, nobody did, so here it is.

On May 7th Intel announced the Merom and Conroe CPUs
will both be called Core 2 Duo just like Pentium had different
generations Pentium, Pentium 2 etc, this will be the 2nd generation
of Core.
The Duo is to signify dual core.

The mobile (Merom) versions will be the T5000 and T7000 series.
--- 667 Mhz FSB ---
-- 2 MB shared L2 Cache --
Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66 Ghz)
Core 2 Duo T5600 (1.83 Ghz)

--- 667 Mhz FSB ---
-- 4 MB shared L2 Cache --
Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00 Ghz)
Core 2 Duo T7400 (2.16 Ghz)
Core 2 Duo T7600 (2.33 Ghz)

The desktop (Conroe) versions will be the E4000 and E6000 series.
--- 800 Mhz FSB ---
Core 2 Duo E4200 (1.66 Ghz)

--- 1066 Mhz FSB ---
-- 2 MB shared L2 Cache --
Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86 Ghz)
Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13 Ghz)
-- 4 MB shared L2 Cache --
Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.40 Ghz)
Core 2 Duo E6700 (2.67 Ghz)
Core 2 Duo E6800 (2.93 Ghz)

There will also be an extreme (highest performing) version
of the desktop chip later this year
--- 1333 Mhz FSB ---
-- 4 MB shared L2 Cache --
Core 2 Extreme (3.33 Ghz)

Woodcrest will become the new Xeons,
replacing the current Netburst architecture based models.

This last one looks like a nice chip..... I think I will wait......

Anytime Intel labels a chip "extreme" it comes with an extreme price tag. You will likely be able to buy two excellent Conroe-based computers for the price of one extreme computer.

You reply "assumes facts not in evidence", i.e. that my price sensitivity
is high.

Why wouldn't I just buy two extreme computers?

Some of us are willing to pay the extra $$$ for the extra performance.

True. Most crunchers would rather have two computers that perform at 80% performance of the one extreme computer.

I think my abbreviation is better than the one from Intel:

It's reality: AMD's K8L will double FP throughput:

But we probably have to wait for it to arrive till H2 2007.
