Try this project
Cracking old Enigma ciphered messages here:

neat
|
Nice! Is this your project?
|
i'll run this project for a few days. I wouldnt mind knowing what those subs were up to 64 years ago.

They were probably spamming each other - with enigmatic messages, of course. |
The first one has already been broken: http://www.bytereef.org/m4-project-first-break.html
Doesn't sound like spam to me... |
Cool, I think I'll join!

Doesn't sound like spam to me...
Oh, sure, on the surface (pardon the pun ;) this looks like a routine stringified message from a U-Boot captain:
vonvonjlooksjhffttteinseinsdreizwoyyqnnsneuninhaltxxbeiangriffunterwasser gedruecktywabosxletztergegnerstandnulachtdreinuluhr marquantonjotaneunachtseyhsdreiyzwozwonulgradyachtsmystossen achxeknsviermbfaelltynnnnnnooovierysichteinsnull
But recovering the font-colorization of the original Enigmail (which I happen to have handy in my, um, coat pocket - yeah, that's the ticket...) shows that it's a typical boner-popping-pill spam:
vonvonjlooksjhffttteinseinsdreizwoyyqnnsneuninhaltxxbeiangriffunterwasser gedruecktywabosxletztergegnerstandnulachtdreinuluhr marquantonjotaneunachtseyhsdreiyzwozwonulgradyachtsmystossen achxeknsviermbfaelltynnnnnnooovierysichteinsnull
The more things change, the more they stay the same... |
Ernst, you need to be moderated! Too funny, thanks for the laugh!
Ernst, you need to be moderated! Too funny, thanks for the laugh!
Hey, whaddya know - I guess men love it, too. Not that there's anything wrong with that... ;) |
I'm surprised that a german submarine captain spreads spam in english. Did he anticipate that the Allies intercept and decrypt the message?
|
The message was for ewmayer.
|
ewmayer used the allied font colorization. Here comes the German one:
vonvonjlooksjhffttteinseinsdreizwoyyqnnsneuninhaltxxbeiangriffunterwasser gedruecktywabosxletztergegnerstandnulachtdreinuluhr marquantonjotaneunachtseyhsdreiyzwozwonulgradyachtsmystossen achxeknsviermbfaelltynnnnnnooovierysichteinsnull
It's no spam, its an early form of cyber-sex. What was it called? ERECMA? |
Thanks for the alternate encryption, hhh. The genius of this encryption scheme is that multiple spam messages could be encoded using the same innocuous-looking text string. In response to the question as to why ze German Unterseeboot Kapita"ns vould using der English font-highlighting to selling die magical Torpedo-festening (Erektionssteifermachen) pills, it's really rather obvious - their, um, "target market" was der schlappschwanzige British Offizier corps. (Which reminds me of a sehr witziger Joke: What happens to der amorous Britischer Offizier mit der steifen Glied when he runs headlong into ein Brick Wall? Why, he breaks his upper lip, of course, ha ha ha!) When your typical British Naval Officer in WW2 talked about "protecting allied shipping from German torpedoes," you know what he was really talking about, wink wink, nudge, nudge, say no more. And like they say, the best defense is a good offense. Realizing that their enemy was plagued by feelings of sexual inadequacy and being desperately short of, um, hard currency, the Germans devised a subtle and devious scheme to market some novel recent breakthroughs of their pharmaceuticals industry (which alas happened to be more useful for making love than war) to the allies, all whilst maintaining complete deniability on both sides. Sheer genius!
Yes, it's a VERY silly Friday in the ol' mersennforum Lounge... |
It has been recently posted on slashdot: http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/02/26/0646215
Will the million ./-ers army bump the project?.. |
Will the million ./-ers army bump the project?..
It looks like this; looking at the stats, the output has multiplied by about five today.Soon, we will be able to decrypt the other two messages, in English, German and many other languages. H. |
hmm the devoloper was a allie spy who was trying to sell the purple pill to the germans and be able to take orders to pass on to his allie counterparts -_-
|
I think the germans were using steganography.
Nice! Is this your project?
No, NO... my future project, (very very future) will probably be about Multimagic square or something similar, as implementation difficulty. Of course if you have other proposals (but simple to implement) tell me. I think that will be better implement something for BOINC platform. |

I can help you out with writting the code for Beal or magic square, I did alot of research on the topics. Let me know once you have decided on the topic.
What about Beal's conjecture?
There is no such thing as the Beal Conjecture. There does exist the Beal PRIZE, which has been offered for the Fermat-Catalan Conjecture, as sharpened by Tijdeman and Zagier. But Beal's claim of the conjecture as his own is ridiculous (In my opinion and the opinion of others). See, for example Pages 416-417 of Crandall & Pomerance. |
Read the notice in AMS about beals conjecture.
Krah said that he is not sure the remaining two codes will be cracked. So far, the power of thousands of PCs joined in this effort has resulted in little success. "There is no guarantee that another break will occur at all," Krah was quoted as saying. "There is simply a fair chance."
Would a brute force attack be possible? I was wondering this, and how many rotor/plugboard settings a PC could test, in a second.
The Germans considered the task to be impossible, and certainly even a modern computer might take a year to work through this number of machine settings, if it simply tried them out in turn. There are too many possible plug-board configurations. |
The second one has been broken:

whoa, this project is almost over
