No, there is a default built until the client that decides whether the computer should pursue first time LL testing, doublechecking or trial factoring. This decision is based solely on processor speed.
That's kind of bothersome because as processors progress in capacity and the exponents get larger, the older processers *should* shift from LL testing to factoring, but it looks like there's no mechanism in place to support that, unless they keep upgrading to newer versions of the software and George keeps advancing the threshold with each release. If the client is set to "Whatever makes sense" (default), then the *server* decides what kind of work will be handed out -- so this can be changed at the server side as and when needed -- in fact, it has already been done several times. OTOH, if the user has manually changed the option to a specific type of test... c'est la vie... |

Good, then there should never be a problem with running out of factoring projects...unless there are more people explicitly targeting them than are needed. Drew |

The "whatever makes sense" decision is built into the client.

Really? Can some one confirm this, then? Its been a while since I looked into these things. If that's the case, I owe drew an apology. |
The "whatever makes sense" boundaries are determined by the client - though this looks set to change when the v5 server comes online - probably sometime next year. ATM, the only way to shift the boundaries is to change clients.

It's possible to increase the thershold over time by using a function of the date. Take the number of days since the release and multiply the thershold by f(x) where x=number of days.
Of course, this is useless when dealing with processor specific features optimizations. |
