Call for Help with llrnet server
 

Hi all,

we have a problem with our llrnet server. It is running very unstable in the last weeks due to thermal or other hardware problems. It is not sure how long the machine will be available for us.

Is there anybody with the resources to run an llrnet server. That means both the PC and the time to maintain the server.

Please contact me or Citrix for that matter. If there is somebody able to help we will plan together with Footmaster( who runs the server now ) the best way for transition of the server.

What type of machine and connection is require to run the server?

1) any windows/linux machine should do -- llrnet is not cpu intensive, the machine should stay on most of the time.
2) any connection which is on 24/7 will do

It must be a windows machine with permanent connection to the internet and must run 24/7.

The machine should also provide a read only ftp or scp connection so that i can download the result files whenever needed.

I a file with the WUs into the forum like it is done now and the maintainer of the machine has to append that file with the work file on the server.
(As far as i know a restart of the llrnet server app is needed afterwards)

Thats all that is needed as far as i know. Maybe Footmaster or anybody else using the llrnet server can correct me.
( I can not use the server due to several restrictions i have when running software on my office machines. So i have no first hand experience with the server)

There is a newer version of the llrnet server that uses mysql as a backend but i don't know anything about it yet.

My machine is 24/7 on. My IP is dynamic so from time to time my connection goes down but I have a software that controls and restores the internet connection. I have bandwidth limit of 4GB per month. How much traffic the server would generate?
Is it necessary to install a dedicated sofware to run the server?

Give me two or three days to see If I can find a computer at university that can be used as a server.

Dynamic IP will not be a problem, I can register a URL to point to your IP. You will have to install a software that updates your IP each time it changes.

You might want to use a proxy llr server that way you have more control over what numbers the server is serving, also you will get real time residues.

Till now no success to find a new server.
At the moment the old one runs stable again.
But on the long run we still need a new home.
If anybody thinks he can commit himself and his resources
long enough for the project please inform us.

If Footmasters PC breaks down or something, I may be able to have my laptop running as a backup. It is often turned on "most of the time".
However, only the next two weeks and I cannot guarantee anything.

I have most of what is needed to help - stable machines, the willingness and know-how to do it, and a 24/7 Internet connection.

The only problem is bandwidth. There would be plenty of bandwidth for incoming data, but out going data would be limited to about 56K (its a broadband satellite connection, so latency might be an issue also). If you think that is adequate let me know and we'll get it rolling.

Sorry for the late answer.
But due to my PC problems i missed some of the posts here.
As i have never run the server myself i don't know what bandwith is realy needed but i think it is not that much.
Most data will be transfered when i grap the newest results i think.

If everyone moves there llrclients to this address then I can direct them to server on which Llrnet is beign hosted.

I just need the IP address of the computer running the LLRnet server. Then if in the future we change the llrnet server, the clients will not notice it as they are pointed to this URL.

We will leave it with [url]www.footmaster.co.uk[/url], since footmaster does not have a static IP, as I will have to change the DNS redirect each time his IP address changes.

@lars, if it works you will have to update the files you are hosting and the LLRnet guide.

The linux and windows clients are updated to use "pspnet.no-ip.org".

I am having some problems installing the PSPnet on some of my computers. Could you double check if footmaster's server is working and the configuration file of the LLRNet you host for windows is set properly.

The client tries to connect port 6999 instead of 12986 and then it does not get any numbers to work on.

The files on the server look correct to me.
But the number 6999 is normally the GUIPORT.
Did you edit the config and removed the "GUI" from the key and have now two keys with the name "PORT"?

Server is up and running but it had a restart early this morning.

I just changed the username and double clicked the llrnet.exe file. It produced an icon in systray and then I opened a GUI windows where it said that it was connecting to port 6999 for some time. Then I killed the exe and tried again and got the same thing. what am I doing wrong?

I liked the old llrnet. This one is too complicated for me:)

OK so far nothing wrong happened.
I will try to dewscibe what you can find where in the GUI. Hope i make myself understandable.

The new llrnet is in principle two parts.
First part is the GUI and second part is the real worker.

When you right click on the gui and say "new gui window" a window is opened
it containes a menu and for listboxes.

The topmost box called "clients" shows the status of the different clients you want to supervice from this GUI window. It is possible to watch clients from several different PCs with one GUI or an llrnet client for PSP and for riesel at the same time.

If you have only one client registered you should see one line in that listbox
the columns should read "Local","localhost","6999"," some status inforamtion"
That is the normal behaviour.

To find out what happens at first select your clinet in the "clients listbox".

When the client is not downloading anything you can check what happens in the next listbox.

Above that box there are two tabs.
First is "info" and second is named "console".
Choose the console box.

Here you can see the output as known from the old client.

I have checked the llrnet server and it haws not handed out any workunit to you so far.

Is it possible that your requests are blocked by a personal firewall ?

Ok it works now. Actually I did nothing different, just repeated what I did yesterday. I am not sure why it did not work yesterday. Thanks!

Maybe the server was down when you mad your first try yesterday.
As i said it was restarted sometime today in the morning the server was restarted but i can not tell when it stopped to work.

Now for something completely different:

I am trying to host my own server, I just find footmaster's server a bit unreliable. So I will not be finishing the 6 residues. They can be reassigned as need be. I was just making some tests.

Also I did not know that people in Germany watched football. :unsure:

No problem with the WU they will be reassigned in 7 days.

For the football thing i am lucky to receive a TV station that shows two games on sunday and also the monday night game. I watched my first game cause there was nothing interisting on the other programms and now i look football allmost every sunday cause i find the game very interesting.
The problem is that it is not easy to be a fan for a special team as there is no real pattern in the way the sunday games are selected. ( Which is done by the NFL representatives and not by the TV station. So i think they try to choose the games that promise the best show)

Now i am looking bills against raiders.

But for the vikings what a comeback to win that game after beeing back 17:0. :bow:

To be honest, I haven't seen an american football match in my life - except maybe some movies "sporting" (oun not intended) this ... sport.

To push this thread up again.

As we can see at the moment the request from my first post is still valid.

Another idea could be to ask one of the other projects out there which has a standalone server if they can host our llrnet server.

What do you think about that idea.

I can run the server, though it will be up for 20-40 min/day ie. it will not be up longer. But that is not a problem as people can set the cache to say 25 tests.

The only problem I see is with people who's clients are not on for 24/7. They will have to hope that their computer is on when I turn my server on. They can also switch to manual LLR.

I can run the server on my home PC. It's on 24/7 but maybe off because of an electrical outage for about once a month. Bad news is I'll not go home until thursday.

If you want to run the server don't forget that i need access to the results file on a daily basis.

This can happen like with the old server where i have ftp/scp access. This would only be access to this one folder on the system if setup correctly.

The other way would be to setup a script that mails the results file once a day to my Mail account.

I have a dedicated server in The Planet data center in Dallas, TX if you need somewhere to host a server. With static ip of course. It is a RedHat system.

Hi to all,

to have the system runing until we find i final solution i did set up a new server on my own hardware at home.
I will check what extra costs come with the extra traffic/time the machine is online. The other thing is that the machine has to prove that it is stable enough when run as a server.

To access the machine you have to change the server name to

pspnet.no-ip.info

Thats all you have to do.
The old results will be accepted and to make sure the there are no conflicts with k/n pairs already send out by the old server i have only activated the 1725000.txt file. The old file will be reactivated next weekend.

@magnav0x: Sorry for your linux system but i have only a dynamic ip.
About your offer to host the server we should talk in detail after thing have settled down a little bit.

I hope that i made everything right with the no-ip domain and the connection stay up.

One more things. As i am not 100% sure that everything is stable now as this is my first try with the server i would recomment that you set the client to download 2days worth of work for the moment.

Please report success and failures so i can check the logs what happens.
