"Other server" down

Apologies in advance if this is not the proper space for discussing this, but I noticed that since yesterday the server holding replicated data of the Mersenne domain (status/cleared reports, copies of software, and the like) at http://tuatara.sdsu.edu/~mersenne/ appears to be down.

My understanding is that this extra server is not under direct control of the Mersenne community - and thus its availability is somehow more fluctuant - reason for discussing here is just to understand if this is expected to be a temporary discontinuity, or a more radical one.

Any input is appreciated.

It's back up now. Something had occurred to the OS which I was unable to resolve remotely. I was finally able to get to it today and reset things. The server has been running near continuously for a little over a year. Sorry for the downtime, it was unexpected and of course had to happen when I was away.

Thanks much delta_t

Archive down (briefly)

A preemptive note.
I'm aware the archive server is down. I'm working on getting things back up and running again. It appears that the IDE controller failed. Instead of trying to patch-fix the existing server, I am now working on putting together another machine to replace it. I'll get the data transferred over and send word when it's back up. The newer archive server should be faster and more reliable.
Standby.

post specs also are you gonna run prime on it ;) :w00t:

Intel motherboard, Pentium 4 2.53GHz, 533MHz bus, 1GB DDR RAM. RAID1 (mirrored) 80GB drives.
OS is FreeBSD, and this time it's thttpd as it's web server. Pretty fast but most importantly, stable.

Was there any doubt that it would be running mprime? Of course it will.

Back up and running

The new archive server is back up. Notice that the default directory has changed.

delta_t 2005-12-08 15:15

I need to take the archive server offline for a few days beginning today, Thurs, Dec 8.
Since I'll be working on several servers in that farm I might as well take this opportunity to do some hardware and software work on it.
I'll post when it is back up and working again.

moo 2005-12-09 00:03

Give it a deep cleaning -_-

rudi_m 2005-12-09 23:16

Are you talking about mersenne.org webserver?
I noticed that its down almost each day for some hours and if its up then its very slow mostly.
I could mirror it somehow if you want!?
Or maybe it would help if you just redirect the static parts and downloads of that Homepage.

Just tell me if can help somehow!

moo 2005-12-09 23:33

No this is the backup data archive delta is kind enough to run this seperate server that stores a copy of the mersenne site and the ftp directory backup.

delta_t 2005-12-11 16:12

I actually haven't taken it down yet because I was working on another server the past couple days. I'm going to take it down today though after I finish backing up the contents. It should be back up after a few hours. I'll post when it's back up again.

I needed to do more preparation for the changes I'll be making to go smoothly, so it'll go down around midnight (UTC) for several hours. Once again, I'll post when it's up.

delta_t 2005-12-13 17:21

Okay the archive server is back up and running again. Changes were on the OS level so it should all be the same as before.

I have a temporary server setup for downloading the day hourly and monthly thats currently in testing stability is unknown.
its
mersenne dot hobby-site dot org
replace "dot" with "."

You sent me a PM with this one that works:

yes i posted it incorrectly im sorry it is

that is my mistake.

Hehehe I just fell into the same trap of the wrong URL. Thanks for the right one. You have a lot of data on there. If you have time some HTML page might make it look nicer than pure file downloading. eg organise files in some way rather than just archive/serve them.

Or is such minimalist approach in order to maximise cycles given to your iterations? ;-)

moo 2006-01-16 23:49

-_- unfortunatly i cant run prime95 on that machine its a cobalt raq2.... mips little edan. Currently im working on a system were it emails account reports hourly but i am frearful to think what people might think about putting the account name and passwords in a database which understandable so right now its just a tinker toy...

moo 2006-01-21 22:24

There have been a few changes my server has a index page **pats self on back**
and it allows you to sign up to have your accounts status page sent to your email <-- hopefully someone will use this
check it out soon http://mersennearchive.hobby-site.org

Apparently, the tuatara.sdsu.edu server is not reachable, and has not been over the last few days. Would anyone (Delta_t, maybe?) put an eye on it?

Thanks in advance

Sorry about not posting why it's down. A lot of changes have been implemented here at the university and one is a new border firewall that essentially blocked all incoming traffic to the server. Have to go through some official hoops to get it going again, so hang on for a little longer.

garo 2007-02-27 20:52

Thanks. It is a great service and we appreciate your efforts.

delta_t 2007-03-01 22:21

Update. The server is back up and running. There are several days missing (end of Feb) and a few hours from today.

Also, if you'll notice I had to take down the old 2004 archives because I started to run out of space. If it's important to have the 2004 data up, I could probably get those back.

Xyzzy 2007-03-01 23:01

Do you need a larger hard drive? I'm sure we can come up with something.

delta_t 2007-03-02 05:32
Do you need a larger hard drive? I'm sure we can come up with something.
The current server has two 80G drives (mirrored RAID) with about 10G remaining (after removing the 2004 data). Space-wise we'll be okay for a little longer. But if people want the 2004 back up, then I would need to swap the array (I'd probably upgrade the OS and the httpd at the same time). So it's really up to the GIMPS community.

Xyzzy 2007-03-02 05:38

Step 1: Figure out the cost to upgrade.

Edit: IIRC, you back up the data to DVD. Is mirroring necessary?

delta_t 2007-03-03 02:23

I use mirrored drives as to ensure server uptime and redundancy. And even with that I still archive to less volatile media (i.e. DVD's) every so often.

I may have some spare drives to throw in that have more capacity and so I'll be able to bring 2004 back, but that won't be until I find some spare time to do so.

Xyzzy 2007-03-03 13:26

Have you considered lzip instead of gzip or bzip2?

http://web.archive.org/web/20010405210126/lzip.sourceforge.net/faq.html

delta_t 2007-03-03 20:32

Oddly enough I have not. For some strange reason, I'm a little reluctant. But I'm sure I could be convinced

ewmayer 2007-03-05 17:33

lzip ... is that the compression algorithm invented by famed minimalist computer guru Dick "Bupkus"?

(Not to be confused with the famous ex-chicago-Bears player.)

You didn't read through the page : it's Lessis-Moore's algorithm...
Really some good ideas behind that. Finally, storing all my data with lzip and reformatting harddisks would save me lots of time I currently spent on searching old files and - even worse - comparing the zillion versions I have of each given file to find the latest (correct) version - which is of course never there...

delta_t 2007-03-27 15:14

I'm aware that something is wrong with the server right now. I'll work on getting it resolved. It may be a day or so as I'm quite busy right now, but I'll get to it as soon as I can. Thanks for the patience everyone.

delta_t 2007-04-19 16:22

Update. Sorry the server is still inaccessible, but I'm just finally getting to it now, been busy. We didn't lose much even though it was off line - this is because I kept older server's collection scripts running. I'll post again when it's all up and running again. Thanks for the patience.

delta_t 2007-04-19 17:37

Okay, it's back up and running again.

delta_t 2007-05-04 04:01

Sorry if anyone is having problems accessing the archive server. Main network issues that are completely out of my control.
