I learned some strategy on that by watching [URL="http://ov3y.github.io/2048-AI/"]an AI[/URL] run. I've gotten to 2048, but not any higher (the Android version, at least, lets you play on once you reach 2048 if you want).
If you want to make it insanely difficult, try [URL="http://sztupy.github.io/2048-Hard/"]a version of it where there's an AI[/URL] that puts the new pieces in the worst possible spot for you. After a few games, my highest-point tile there is 64.
